Good news: canned PACIFIC salmon is OK!

I get pink salmon, it is really cheap, not

quite as delish as Sockeye, but good enough.

Farmed salmon, even if it was raised in B.C.,

is always the type Atlantic salmon.

Three cheers for the state of Alaska which has

banned salmon farming altogether.

I think I missed the original post. Why not eat farmed salmon?Seer

For the same reason you don't want to

eat feedlot beef, and other critters

high up the food chain that are being

fed with less desirable substances, and

concentrating them in their meat.

You are what your food eats.

The concentration of so many fish in

confinement creates perfect conditions

for disease, so they are fed antibiotics,

and so on.

Did you know that farmed salmon is naturally a grey,

unpalatable color?

They actually feed the fish some kind of dye to

make them salmon colored.

Read all about it at the website of

David Suzuki.

This read this article recently on the benefits of wild salmon vs. farmed salmon. It may give you some insight into the decision to eat only wild salmon.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Farmed salmon contains far more toxic chemicals than wild salmon -- high enough to suggest that fish-eaters limit how much they eat, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

The culprit is "salmon chow" -- the feed given to the captive fish, the researchers report in this week's issue of the journal Science.

Many health experts urge people to eat fish such as salmon because it contains healthy fats, especially the omega-3 fatty acids that can lower the risk of heart disease and perhaps have other health benefits, too.

But the researchers, as well as environmental groups, said the findings in Science indicate that people should choose their fish carefully. They should also demand that salmon be clearly labeled to indicate whether it is farmed or wild so they can make informed choices about which fish to eat.

You can read the entire article here - http://story.news./news?tmpl=story & cid=571 & ncid=571 & e=2 & u=/nm/20040108/hl_nm/environment_salmon_dc_2

Personally, I choose to supplement my diet with an Omega 3 Salmon Oil that is pressed only from the flesh of wild Salmon - no organs, entrails, heads or tails. And it is certified to be free of any heavy metals, toxins or poisons. You can find it at www.omega-3.us. The only salmon that I eat comes from www.ecofish.com.

I heard recently there are significantly higher levels of mercury in

farmed salmon vs. non-farmed.
