NEW DELHI: Delhiites are all set to turn off lights for an hour as the clock strikes 8.30 p.m. Saturday to observe Earth Hour, a global climate awareness initiative.

This is for all to gear up for earth hour and many such hours in future. This summer when i write the email - i am still observing earth hour in Delhi - capital of India. In fact I will be observing many such earth hours in next couple of months and that to in a very hot climate. I guess it was a preparedness message sent to all to get ready for load sheading/power cuts :).

The concept of switching off lights may be fine in countries that have power - however in India - we do not have light - does someone realize this. We have frequent power cuts. So what is the point of this earth hour? How does it help when you want to observe giving up something that you do not have. I can under stand person fasting if he has food and is denying himself eating - but what about people who do not have food and are forced to fast?

Thanks to Electricity department - the prices of electricity have gone up - even through there is insufficient electricity. If this is state of capital city - i can imagine what would be state of smaller towns and villages.

I do not think this earth hour concept applies to India - where there is insufficient power. This applies to counties where there is sufficient power. So much money spent of advertising and giving to celebrities - would have been well spent in improving infrastructure of the country and providing electricity.
