Our forefathers were very intelligent - therefore they linked fasting to religious occasion. Fasting has many health benefits. On such occasion is Karva chauth. Ritual fasting is most popular in Punjabi culture and is mainly observed by women on various occasions. Many unmarried women observe the ritual fast in order to secure a good husband, and married women fast for the general welfare of their husbands. The vart of karva chauth is most popular among newly married women. It is observed to pray for the long life of a husband. It is customary for the parents to take presents and Indian sweets to their married daughters at the performance of the vart of karva chauth. It is one of the important postwedding rituals that assists the newly married woman to settle down in her new and permanent household.
