Is this what doctors supposed to do? A sample of level at which doctors can fall to make money.

MAIN PLAYERS Dr Amit Kumar, ran the kidney transplant racket with three others — his brother Jeevan and doctors Upender Aggarwal and Saraj Kumar. Only Upender is in police net

SUPPORT CAST Many pvt hospitals and path labs are in the ring of suspicion for providing care to Amit's patients and donors. Amit also roped in qualified docs and paramedics for transplants — like RML Hospital nurse, Linda, arrested on Wednesday

SCALE OF SCAM 500 to 600 transplants done in 9 years in which around Rs 100 crore changed hands

MODUS OPERANDI A network of touts lured poor labourers, at times forcibly, to become donors. Touts hung around at nephrology wards of leading hospitals to contact prospective clients. No tout knew where the operations took place. Amit tested the donor's blood in his mobile lab (an Esteem car) and took him for the operation to his Gurgaon Sector 23 house, which had an operation theatre

GLOBAL NETWORK Amit placed disguised ads in international medical journals and on the internet to attract clients. He had overseas agents — one of them was identified as Panagotia Gorgia from Greece

PLUSH FACILITIES Such was the thriving business that Amit bought several properties around the world and had a fleet of 8 luxury cars to ferry patients. His wealthy client stayed at a wellequipped guesthouse at DLF I

MUMBAI TO DELHI Amit, then known as Dr Santosh Raut, ran a kidney racket from Kaushalya Nursing Home at Khar, Mumbai. It was busted in 1994. He jumped bail, resurfaced in Nagpur, then Delhi and finally in Gurgaon

THE MONEY CHAIN Recipients were charged Rs 15-18 lakh. Donors got Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Police say docs were given roughly Rs 50,000 per surgery, though the kingpins conducted most of operations themselves. An aesthetist got Rs 10,000-15,000 while a tout was paid Rs 10,000

ARRESTS Jeevan's wife, Pooja, their driver Umesh, Dr Upender, his driver Jagdish, three touts and two helps of Amit, nurse Linda and a doctor in Alwar, K K Aggarwal

ESCAPE ROUTE Amit held multiple passports. Cops suspect he could have either fled to Nepal or Canada, where his family is settled. His former patients may have aided in the escape
