Hi All,

I am trying to create an essential oil blend for a moisturiser but i am having

difficulty finding top note essential oils that are not phototoxic- as all the

citrus oils seem to be. I can think of only a few and I am not even sure I am

correct, here is my tiny list;

-bergamot bergapten free

-petitgrain (not that keen on the scent of this and neroli-both I find quite

similar - might me the blocked nose)

-neroli

-mandarin (???) in small amounts

Does anyone have any suggestions as i am getting quite frustrated with the

endless blending!

Geranium would be good I think but it is a middle note with a high odor

intensity.

Bitter orange is phototoxic but I think that sweet orange is not. It is also

softening.

a lot would depend on what other oils you are using... possibly Palma

Rosa... actually I'd not be as concerned about balancing the blend with

top, heart and base notes as I would be the functions the oils serve.

As its the expressed citrus oils (expressed from the peels) which are said to be

phototoxic, this wouldn't apply to the distilled oils such as neroli (Citrus

sinensis varieties, flowers) or petitgrain (small fruits, leaves and flowers)

which are distilled oils.

However, these latter ones, are very rare, expensive oils, and adulteration is

frequent if not the custom, containing more often than not even more toxic

synthetic compounds..True though, they make an excellent immediate scent

sensation, if natural..

And then, every honestly distilled essential oil will by itself have a top-

middle and bottom note to it.. Some oils smell aggressive pinelike in the

beginning, then reveil a more soft and deep undertone, then may become entirely

different, maybe smouthly pleasant, maybe stale and indifferent, maybe revolting

upon drying out...

If you are trying to compose a moisturizer, topnote to you may mean the

immediate feeling of scent, the immediate feeling of luxury and pleasure that

the scent can give to the person using it.

To compose a perfume, which will stay and surround the person however, you would

need to compose a mixture keeping all this in mind.. the immediate pleasure, the

comfort of surrounding, embracing and evolving, but also the dry out, the

residue..

I am not a perfumer, I am sure there are better words. Sure there are other

rules.

And adding a fixative oil, an oil which can carry the scent, as well as being a

good ingredient in a moisturizer for skin because of its cell-regenerating

action, such as Daucus carota or Laurus nobilis is always an option..

Good luck to you

Thanks Janina,

I have made the blend and it is lovely and simple and has a mixture of expensive

and inexpensive oils which is nice.
