Hey All,

My 3 year old has chickenpox. Does any one have any suggestions how to help

with scaring. I know that colloidal oatmeal in his bathwill help with the

itching. Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks in advance.

reduce the itch, and the chance of scars diminishes. The scars come

(mostly) from the sores and scabs that get irritated or infected by

scratching. The scars, like most, do fade. Mine are unnoticeable to

everyone but me.

At night or naptime, put on little mitts of some sort so he or she

doesn't scratch while asleep. Tepid baths, with the oatmeal, are also

nice. A tiny bit of lavender for soothing, if the child likes the

fragrance, might be good in the bath or in the pillow slip. Sick

children in my mother's house were allowed two extra stories a day,

and the extra attention and distraction helped - so much so that I

carried on that tradition.

When my kids had them (one at a time, separated by periods of three

weeks, the family was isolated for just about 10 weeks, and I had sick

or fractious children for three freaking months! I think I kinda gave

up towards the end and gave one or two of them some mini doses of

benadryl. It might have been my energy flagging rather than the kids'

increased need.

I went through gallons of something called Caladryl lotion, a blend of

calamine with benedryl, as the ex-husband had terrible reactions to

poison oak, and he occasionally helped out with forest fires or went

hunting, etc. So I imagine I slopped that all over the kids, but I

don't remember. They did survive, only one had any scars at all, of

the 5 I had at the time (including the 2 fosters, naturally they got

the danged bugs, too).
