If folks will get out and vote during the mid terms .. lotsa loser

legislators from both parties will get a modern day stoning and have to go

look for a real job. Considering the jobs situation now in America that is

poetic justice in its finest form. ;-)

Hi Marcia,

I am confused. I regularly refer to the Cosmetic Safety Database by

Environmental Working Group, and I think it is a very valuable resource. Is

this information being mis-applied when it comes to the pending Colorado

situation?

Hi Susan,

As in everything, there is good stuff and there is bad. I believe the

people at the EWG are perhaps primarily volunteers, Skin Deep is a huge

database and requires tremendous maintenance. There are some dots between

EWG, Skin Deep and CFSC that aren't connected if you attempt to follow and

verify exact source at the root for their toxicity claims. There are links

that are broken on Skin Deep that should connect to the appropriate research

in PubMed. The biggest problem is within CFSC itself. As I pointed out,

they worked against (perhaps unknowingly) small business interests during

the FDA Globilization Act Committe process and were nonresponsive to signers

when queried. There are many articles on http://www.aromaconnection on

standards, research and cosmetic issues, however, we are volunteers, too.

Our search tool isn't functioning and lord knows everyone has not used the

same categories. But, spend some time, there's information on why we are

questioning the database at Skin Deep. Also, Kayla Fioravanti at Essential

Wholesale has lots of information on this issue on her blog.

What we are worried about is that regulations are attempted to be decided,

not by science and the usual research bodies, but by consumer groups such as

CFSC. Read the other blogs I listed in mine; you'll get a picture. Kayla's

blogpost is there, you can spend some time looking for her other well

reasoned comments about Skin Deep (EWG's database).

I plan on writing a letter. I got involved with Donna Marie with the FDA

legisltation. The problem with these consumer groups is most of them ARE headed

by volunteers, housewives, politician wives and they read magazines and take the

articles for fact without doing any research, they have no background in the

subject matter. I don't have a very high opinion of politicians anyway because

they rely on people to feed them with information regardless of whether the

information is true or not. They just deal with little information and move on

to the next item on the agenda.
