Guest guest
The following is long and is meant to heal. February 15, 2010 Dear Group & Marcia, Good morning and A Happy President’s Day to each and every one of you. Last week I made a post to Marcia and anyone else on the list who wanted to read it. I made this post in order to get us to move on to another subject but I also wanted to express some thoughts that I had to Marcia about all of us putting our money where our mouths are. Too many times we sit in judgment on groups that we are not even involved in. This needs to be stopped and looked at from a different perspective of “What can I do to help change this situation?” Too many of us have sit on the sidelines and not become involved. That is wrong. We all have to take responsibility for what is going on whether it be on this list or another list or in either of the at organizations or in our own backyard. We each need to become proactive in some way. I don’t see that except in the “old-timers” that are on this list that do come head to head with others occasionally which is as it should be but we must disagree with each other in a positive manner. Several years ago I wrote an aromatherapy mystery novel to teach and to get people interested in our profession as well as to think. I used different “known” people in our world. I used characters that were depictions of Butch, Sylla, Marcia, Kurt, Marge, Jade (whom I killed off in the first chapter) and a number of other people. The only problem was that I forgot that we all had egos. The book sold well but not as well as I expected. I learned from that experience and the next at murder mystery will be better. (I still have a few copies left that I use as examples of people in our profession who have worked to make it a profession.) The idea was that if we had mystery novels to get people interested in at then we would gain more people in aromatherapy and other books would follow such as the herb books written about the Hill Country here in Texas. You, the younger members need to pick up the torch to help make aromatherapy a better profession than it is. You are our future. You need to begin your journey sometime, like now, in order to insure that you have a future in aromatherapy. We, the “old-timers” are beginning to release the reins to you, the “kids.” Butch has semi-retired to Tennessee, Martin is getting older and slower but still active, Marcia has moved to the farm to do much needed work and research (and yes, I do respect and admire Marcia even if I don’t agree all the time with her), and I am even slowing down due to health issues (I closed down my Mom’s house 10 years ago and developed problems with mold and fungus). Each of us is over 69 years of age. Where are my new teachers and mentors coming from? Hopefully and I do believe that many will come from this list. I am now mentoring, teaching and trying to develop new ways to look at different areas in aromatherapy in my part of the country. Each part of the country has developed its own way of working in aromatherapy. Now we need to marry these parts of the country together in a new and vibrant future for aromatherapy. One of the main reasons that I am so involved in looking at our future is that aromatherapy “saved” my life several times within the past 25 years. It helped me get through corporal tunnel in both wrists after my son was born, helped us with allergies in a natural way, and helped me to move forward with a weakened immune system from the fungus and mold issues 10 years ago as well as have a less hard time with Shingles two years ago. I feel that I owe aromatherapy more than I can ever repay it. I am glad for the other people that are out here doing research daily. I am especially thankful for Marcia, Martin, Sylla, Butch, and other old-timers. Without Marcia and Martin we would not have a lot of very good research. I have a great deal of respect for Marcia because she is a strong willed lady who is out here doing a lot of research for the future. She also makes you think. She makes me think and she should make you think. I may not always agree with her and I will let her know this in a nice way out of respect for her as should you when you disagree with others on this or any other list. I am ready for us to move on to other subjects but only with the understanding that each of you on this list think about what you can do to help aromatherapy to become a better profession and how you can help change the organizations through joining and giving them your support as well as your disagreements, through being active on lists such as this list, and becoming proactive in your own backyard. I hope that my email the other day made you, the other list members think about what you can do to help grow our aromatherapy profession. Disagree between members on this list is important because it gets you, the younger ones, to thinking about what you can do or should do. We, the older group, have been out here for over 15 years plus (myself, over 25, as likewise I believe Marcia, Martin, and Robert Tisserand) and we will gone in the next 5 to 10 years. Where does that leave you, the youngsters? It leaves you as our future. Remember that the journey of a 1000 steps begins with the first step taken. Let us look at organizations for a moment. We have two aromatherapy organizations in the United States. Each organization has its own way of doing things. Not everyone is going to agree to and that is the beauty of these organizations because this is what makes for growth and the continuing of the profession as well as the organization. Some people will leave and hopefully go and start a new organization as AIA was conceived or some will stay to change the organization from the inside. Each organization has its own politics as we have here on this list. That is good because it stimulates growth through thinking through a situation. Each organization is growing and that is what matters. We don’t have another aromatherapy organization in the United States that I know of but hopefully, someone on this list who is young and vibrant may take thearomatherapy ball and run with it and start another organization. Only time will tell. Being unhappy with the current situation is what made the American people revolt against the British in 1776 and we are no different today. Marge, accept my apology if I offended you. I only wanted us to move on or to get other people involved and how they can make a difference whether it be now or in the next few years. My DREAM is to write a murder mystery and I already know two people here in town who will be the inspiration for the first to fall victim!! I found out today that I did not get the job I have been interviewing for, for the past two months. I am disappointed to say the least. Every day I wake up I dred going to work... You really should not have to make an effort not to cry on the way to work every day. I hope you all know how very lucky you are to do what you love for a living!! Guest guest
Rhavda Such eloquence, such truth. Where are those who will lead the next phase of real aromatherapy when you all are gone? I wonder. Hopefully many will step up to the plate and run with this. I dipped my toes in, and realised this is not my battle, although I use it myself, and caution and counsel colleagues and friends who use it, but it is not my profession. Once again, thank you Rhavda, for your note. Regards Darren
