Guest guest
Jeanine, wanted to preface this with how thrilled I am that you have turned to gardening . . . It's at the 'root' (pun intended) of all our aromatic wonders. Do you know if you have the decorative plant or the true wild one? This is very important as the former won't do anything medicinally. Here's some pics so you can see the difference. Decorative ones include: http://www.greenwoodnursery.com/page.cfm/5010 The low-growing landscape shrub, Hypericum calycinum. http://www.prairiemoon.com/seeds/wildflowers-forbs/hypericum-pyramidatum-gre at-st-johns-wort/?cat=249 & from_search= Another lanscape variety, Hypericum pyramidatum or Great St. Johns Wort http://www.prairiemoon.com/seeds/wildflowers-forbs/hypericum-punctatum-dotte d-st-Johns-wort/ Spotted St. Johns Wort, Hypericum punctatum As you can see, there are many species bred for the garden. I suspect this is what your son has given you (unless he actually wild crafted a plant for you). The medicinal St. John's Wort is Hypericum perforatum, and unfortunately, even if you google the correct botanical name, you will find many erroneous pictures and websites. Here's our web page for the infused oil with an accurate picture: http://tinyurl.com/y88zwtm Here's another accurate picture from our hydrosol page (also same pic on our eo page): http://tinyurl.com/ybs8nfx If you do have the true medicinal plant, you can distill it for essential oil and hydrosol, infuse it in a fixed oil and tincture it in alcohol. Even though it grows wild all over the US, it is banned for cultivation in many states because of archaic laws having to do with cattle grazing. If you have a decorative variety, you can still hone your gardening skills and it is a pretty plant. My son gave me a St John's Wort plant for Christmas, I am not a herbalist, so wondered if you could give me some ideas on what to do with it.
