EOs and eyes!

Today at a local farmer's market I was informed by a lady that she wiped

peppermint and/or citrus essential oils on the edge of her nostrils for

migraines. On my querying she indicated that it was fine to use the oils neat

if they were " pharmaceutical grade, " but if they were a lesser quality she put

them in almond oil first. She also mentioned that her chiropractor had once put

peppermint EO _IN_ her eye for a migraine (said it cleared it right up).

When I picked my jaw up off the floor I asked if she knew who her chiro's

supplier was. She said she couldn't remember and didn't carry it with her due

to it being expensive; said it was $30 a bottle. She took my card to contact me

regarding it, supposedly. We'll see if I ever hear from her.

Am I correct in having nearly hyperventilated over this conversation, or am I

completely off my rocker?? This just does not seem safe nor appropriate. Am I

too hide-bound and reading too many aroma texts??

Nite all! Thanks for the musings and thoughts!

My reaction - 'Yikes! a migraine is bad enough with out burning eyes on fire!'

Oh, that sounds horrible!

I've been thinking about it, perhaps the chiro used very diluted hydrosol

instead? I can't imagine any dilution of Peppermint EO ever being anything but

horrible.

Still it sounds like a way to torment people, not a cure.

That's what I was thinking (actually my thought-process was more along the lines

of " WTF! " But I didn't say any such thing). She said it ceased the migraine and

it was a burny sensation similar to putting eye drops into really dry eyes.

I don't think I recollected my dropped jaw for several moments after they mosied

on.

Thanks for the comments, glad to know I'm not alone in being flabberghasted.

i have heard that rubbing peppermint neat on the tummy will work

wonders for digestion and other stomach problems, but i've not tried it

myself. altho that may be true, i would not suggest that anyone use

peppermint neat (or any other e.o.) on any part of the

body....especially the eyes! of course it's a personal decision, and

many believe that the e.o.'s should be used neat, but i will take my

chances with dilution. hard to believe any chiro worth their salt would

do anything so reckless. could she have misunderstood what her

chiropractor told her? if she gets back in touch with you maybe you

could gently suggest she do some research and offer her resources for

legit information about essential oils? given her statement about

'pharmaceutical grade' oils it is obvious that her education on the

matter is limited.
