Guest guest
Is it GM/GE, or is it the pesticides used with non-organically grown stuffum? i react to most fresh fruits and vegetables, and many processed ones (canned lima beans; i can boil the color out of frozen peas and STILL react), and my food allergies seem to progress furtheras i get older and with each pregnancy (i'm starting to react to shrimp *sob*). i DO NOT react to my neighbor's cucumbers (small companion planted home garden), AND i made it through half of a large peach that is organic except in name. i couldn't finish that peach, and i couldn't eat my youngest's peach a few days later (too soon), BUT i was able to enjoy part of a peach!! *happy jig* first time in more than 20-25yrs. i'm with you on the concern over lab-modified food, but wanted to raise this possibility as well in case it was useful brainstorm fodder. Guest guest
Sorry to hear about your food issues. I had very rough food allergy issues from about 1992 through 1998 (perhaps not as rough as yours, though). Whether genetically modified, or genetically engineered, " Frankenstein foods " are here to stay. About a month ago I bought an organic (yes, it had the certified label on the package) corn product at Whole Foods. It was delicious. Within about 4 to 5 hours I started to get a pounding headache and soon after the other accompanying symptoms which indicated a " GM experience. " I took four charcoal capsules to mitigate the ill effects of the poisonous food and instead of being ill/bed ridden for 4 days I had symptoms but I was able to function. My husband took the remaining product back to the store and talked to someone. I got a phone call and I chatted with the person at the other end - she said she appreciated that we let her know, etc. In the end she and I both agreed that there will come a time when the organic crops will become cross-pollinated with the GM crops. At that point in time there will be less and less choices for us. I worry about our children... Guest guest
Hi Jessica, This may be a little off topic for aromatherapy, but not really when you think about the interconnectedness of all things, especially plants, which are both food and natural fragrance with myriad purpose. Regarding your first comment, Jessica, I think it's all that you mention. Your comments below only reinforce what many of us have believed for years . . . Organic is the only answer and insecticides, pesticides and especially GM or GE foods are creating disease and interrupting hormonal growth in our children. I would suspect that your neighbor's garden is organic, especially since you mention companion planting. Produce purchased at the big-box supermarkets are not only inundated with chemicals during growing, they are reapplied at the time of processing and packaging. Here's some resources to learn more about the growing movement to eat locally and organically, and that sustainable agriculture is superior to industrial agriculture (remember the monoculture of potatoes that had all of Ireland starving?). http://www.lavidalocavore.org/ Jill Richardson has written a beautiful book " Recipe for America " , available on her website/blog which contains ongoing information about this movement towards whole foods and healthier eating. http://www.michaelpollan.com/ Michael Pollan is a hero of many of us, with a range of brilliant books, videos, lectures and sound reasoning for moving towards sustainability, regional foods, Community Funded Co-op Farms, etc. His motto, " Eat food, not very much, mostly plants . . . " says it all. He will be appearing in the major movie, http://www.foodincmovie.com/ a must see for anyone interested in the state of food and its relationship to disease in America. Watch the trailer and make a point to see the movie to learn more. A good way to get good fruits and vegetables (sometimes they even have chickens/beef/pork, all properly, organically raised and slaughtered) is to join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). These are organic farms that sell shares at the beginning of the season . . . Your share gets you a big box of seasonal goodies weekly - you even learn how to eat with the seasons. Here in the PNW, our produce is delivered May through October. It means cleaning your own vegies and learning how to cook new things you might not be familiar with (rutabagas or garlic flowers) and learning ot eat seasonally, but you and your family will be much healthier. Out of curiosity, I googled CSA farms in NC and got a long list of resources for you . . . http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/chatham/ag/SustAg/csafarms.html http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-38.html http://www.ncfarmfresh.com/farms.asp There are a few of us in the aromatherapy trade who delight in growing and distilling aromatic plants, infusing fixed oils and generally turning people on to doing it themselves. Grow your own garden, including some aromatics and you'll have a perpetual smile on your face.
