Hi Sue,

I would have to politely disagree with your statement regarding " anything

dangerous about Flash or Java. " If you are referring to Adobe Flash Player,

it's well known that Adobe is notorious for not keeping their products

patched, thereby putting users at risk of being hacked, etc.

You disagree that the article was about FireFox and their new warnings?

Hi all

Just to clarify on this:

The article referred to by Martin concerns a Firefox warning to users **about**

Adobe Flash. In that warning they state

" Flaws in the program [Adobe]are routinely exploited by criminals to install

keyloggers and other malicious software on end-user machines. "

The article then states:

" Flash laggards who install a new version of the browser [Firefox] will receive

a warning that reads: " You should update Adobe Flash right now. Firefox is up to

date, but your current version of Flash can cause security and stability issues.

Please install the free update as soon as possible. " A download link is

included "

While I do agree good security is essential and will in the main protect your

computer from such threats, it is also correct to say flaws in Flash player are

a well documented means to virus infection.

Solution is to keep your computers up to date, both in AV/Firewall protection

AND company updates to the programs you run.

Keep well - and virus free :-)

It has been known for years that both Java and Flash are a hackers paradise. It

is NOT simply a problem with firefox. With javascript enabled a web site can

even bypass a proxy and find your location.

You may not think that matters, but we are being monitored for all kinds of

reasons, not just National security, but sinister commercial reasons such as

selling on our web browsing habits, emails, etc. Using both flash and java

simply contributes to the data collected by who knows for what purposes.

If you read the article you referred everyone to again; the article isn't about

FireFox being 'the problem' at all; it is about how FireFox has one solution to

the problem, an automatic reminder which some other browsers don't have.

The solution for some is to not go online at all because they are too afraid to

be hacked or catch a virus.

The solution for others is to go online, but avoid some websites they believe

for one reason or another, are more " dangerous " than others.

The solution for most, is to go online without fear, but wisely using current

solutions to protect themselves by keeping their software updated [or use a

MAC!]

But spreading fear instead of solutions is really not very helpful.

I hate to break the news, but unless you live off the grid and pay only cash for

your purchases, your habits are being monitored for commercial reasons and have

been " forever " . I don't happen to think that market research is sinister,

however. If you own a website, the stat counters which are standard with every

hosting plan are doing exactly the same thing. I know what search terms people

use to find my site, where their internet service originates from, and what kind

of browser they are using; just a few examples. It is standard on every

website...whether you ever use them to evaluate your site or not, the

information is collected.

OK, here is a quick example; this took me about 5 seconds:

aromamedical.com

Medical Herbalist Martin Watt provides an aromatic extract safety manual and

articles about conservation, education, toxicity, therapeutics, and production.

Traffic Rank of 2,598,244 [The rank is calculated using a combination of average

daily visitors and pageviews over the past 3 months. The site with the highest

combination of visitors and pageviews is ranked #1.]

The average number of minutes a user spends per day on this site averaged 2.7

min/day over the past 3 months. The average number of pages viewed, 1.7 over the

past 3 months.

There are 55 sites linking to this site.

Top keywords driving traffic to aromamedical.com from search engines:

rosewood oil, " old lavender oil " , rosewood leaf oil, " they trim the bushes "

The date the domain was first registered 25-Apr-2000.

You have no Java or Flash code on your website, but you do have instructions to

robots which is why this is all public information.

I also do not use cookies, although due to the UK Government, logs of visits are

kept. Only time I ever found those useful was when my site was hacked a few

years back. Otherwise the logs don't give much away as nowadays even IP

addresses are unreliable. Other than that, you could glean more personal

information on me by reading my Bio than from this info. When people use Flash,

and Java it enables far more info to be extracted, especially for expert

hackers.

Many have told me they like my site because it is not covered by drop down

menus, popups, fancy javascripts and all the other program crap.

Oh BTW. Even those stats are not accurate as my site was down for a couple of

weeks when my server went bust.
