Guest guest
Hi guys, An aromatherapy instructor at work noticed an Orange *Seed* EO listed on a bottle of Hugo Naturals room spritzer I brought in today. (I was lazy and bought a bottle of it at Henry's natural foods yesterday while looking for a pre-made 'Dreamsicle' scent.) What IS Orange Seed oil? Does such a thing even exist? If so, is it an EO or a tincture or a hydro? FWIW, this blend comes in a Sage water (hydro?) base and the overriding scent is definitely sweet citrus, though Lemon is the only other citrus in it. Could/would an orange seed have a citrus scent? <archly raises brow> Thanks!, Stacey P.S. I'm more than a little down on this stuff if only because I came home this evening to the scent of 'Vanilla' still in the air from a few spritzes this morning. P.P.S. One of the ingredients is vegetable glycerine. Is this a solubizer? If not, what's its purpose in a spritzer?
Guest guest
Orange seed oil is just one of several names for the preservative often called 'citrus seed oil' and sometimes grapefruit seed oil. " Companies are often looking for the newest product to sell. I had one company working on Lemon Seed Oil and wanting to know what I thought I could do with it. They were hoping to have the exclusive market for a while before others caught up with them. The Lemon Seed Oil from what I remember would be more like a pressed oil, than an EO. (There were very disappointed when I told them I couldn't use an untested oil - Smile Martin.) There is also an oil that comes from the juicing of many citrus fruits. It is marketed as 'Lemon Flavor Oil' or 'Orange Flavor Oil' and is the oil they get floating on the top after juicing many, many pounds of the various fruits. And from what I understand, different from the oil you get from just the peel (it disperses better in aqua solutions - i.e. it's in some soda drinks.) Many of the smaller EO and pressed oil companies have been hit hard the last many years (read most anybody who isn't IFF the mega company)and have been looking for new niche markets to survive. Guest guest
>Is that grapefruit seed extract (GSE) also? Yes, it's one of those products with a dozen names, most so called " grapefruit seed extract " is not just from grapefruit, but other citrus seeds, plus often a touch of synthetic preservative, despite what the suppliers tell you. Guest guest
>What IS Orange Seed oil? To the best of my knowledge, orange seeds do not yield a distilled essential oil. What is made is an extract termed 'citrus seed'which is the preservative already mentioned. It is solubilised with glycerin or propylene glycol. If it was just listed as an ingredient in a blend, then it is being used as a preservative for the other ingredients. If it was just labeled as orange seed " oil " then someone needs their ass kicking as to use it undiluted on the skin would be nuts.
