Guest guest
Hi, I'm new to aromatherapy and to this group and have a question. In most of my reading, it says to store blends in amber glass bottles or at least glass when it comes to sprays. Also to do the blending in a glass bowl. Again with the glass. My question is what's wrong with plastic? Is it because some of the fragrance would be absorbed by the plastic and weaken the blend or change it in some way? The question is more what will the corroded plastic ADD to the essential oil? If EO's are stored in plastic of any kind they will erode and break down the plastic at varying degrees of speed depending on the plastic. This will obviously corrupt the constituents in the oils. Who wants components of plastic in their oils and blends? Hope this helps, Carrie Boyles www.ingredientstodiefor.com
Guest guest
Hi Carrie, I only plan to make very small amounts I can use up in a day or two, nothing long term to start. I mean diluted oils in sprays, carrier oils or lotions. The blends I make should still be in glass I suppose to make sure they stay in tact. I'm very new to this and haven't bought any pure oils yet, just soap and cream with some EO's in them. I really have no idea what most of the oils I have in mind smell like. Just going by profiles describing the scents and the therapeutic uses I'm interested in. Plus customer reviews on the scents and how effective they've been for them. EO's will dissolve in oil or alcohol, but they do NOT mix with water - most of them float on top and will eat the plastic if stored for any length of time. Yes, DO keep any undiluted EO's or blends in glass and don't use dropper tops as the volatile oils will eat the rubber dropper! Guest guest
I've read in a few places that it is okay to store diluted oils in PET plastic that is colored (amber, blue or green). --- On Sun, 2/1/09, Carrie Boyles <carrieboyles wrote: Carrie Boyles <carrieboyles [ATFE2] Re: Storing question ATFE2 Sunday, February 1, 2009, 11:58 PM EO's will dissolve in oil or alcohol, but they do NOT mix with water - most of them float on top and will eat the plastic if stored for any length of time. Yes Janet. PET is the most durable plastic to use with eo's, but again, if the carrier is primarily water based, the oils will float on top and will eventually eat the plastic at the level they are sitting on. Oil and alcohol based carriers should hold the eo's in solution so that PET containers last for a much longer time. Hope this helps.
