Guest guest
Hello all you Kiwi's or even Aussies, I have friends who have been midwives in your countries and it seems the use of Essential oils is more wide spread in Hospitals and at births etc. I was wondered whether this is the case? And what resources if this is so you use to determine safety? I know that the French and British systems have different beliefs about the safety of EO's Any idea where I could find any info. I am paticularly interested in oils that are used with children regularly and what oils are not used during pregnancy. Thanks, Alison Trick-Thornton Thanks Ahead of Time
Guest guest
Hi Alison, I can only speak of my experience, in my small rural town. A number of years ago, I offered to donate an electric oil burner, and oils to a ward in our local hospital that looked after the elderly, dying and frail. My offer was rejected on the grounds that it could be seen, by some, that buring a scent which all residents could smell, was violating the rights of those residents who did not want to smell the scent. Consequently, I kept my burner!! The community now has two seperate aged care facilities. Both of which still stand by the above. Individual residents may have a burner, but it can't be on say, at the nurses station, or at the front desk. I'd love to hear of places that do otherwise, here. Guest guest
Hi Alison. We are very lucky here as we have been able to get essential oils into the Hospices, and in fact not only use burners, but also massage the patients. As one of the specialists pointed out at St Joseph's Hospice here in Auckland when I was doing my training, we probably do more good at that stage of the patient's life ( drugs not counted of course) We have a group of incredible aromatherapy massage therapists who work at Domain Lodge, a respite unit run by the Auckland branch of the Cancer Society, and they provide a well used service as you can imagine We also have a system where midwives deliver most babies, and of course they are much more liberal than doctors. So a woman can choose the birth she wants. At home or in a hospital, in a spa bath or where ever. ( I massaged a woman during her labour in a spa bath........ I got very wet, but it was really amazing.) We had the burner going, music playing, it was wonderful. I cannot really comment on use of essential oils in the general hospitals, but it appears to me that with our hospitals being so incredibly short staffed, if a patients friends or family wanted to use oils and it was not of concern to other patients, I cannot see that there would be a problem. I am not talking about ingestion though. Hope this helps Jeanine, who is very glad summer is nearly here!!! We have had the wettest winter ever in New Zealand!
