Guest guest
Howdy Kathleen, Based on my reply I have decided to delete OT from the subject line .. its no longer Off Topic. > ooooooooooooooooooooh MAN! What a lovely garden Butch. Thankee ma'am .. when I get a few minutes I will post some photos to the Group photo section. Folks around here say they have never seen Broccoli as big as ours in Henry County or anywhere else. And its not just the Broccoli that is outstanding. > Curious... do you have any specific bug problem that you have to > fight against. Ex... aphids, those fat white slug worms that eat > roots... etc. If so, how do you deal with it. Dang betcha on that one .. we have our share of insect pests but we came up with some ways to deal with some of the problem .. no way to totally eliminate garden pests if you grow Organic but there are ways to control and/or eliminate the majority of them. Its not all about killing them and we use some plants that draw friendlies and some that repel those that are not friendly .. and we use some Essential Oils on plants. Mama Nature's critters are still going to get their share regardless of what you do .. you just gotta make sure that their share is as small as possible. Giving them their share is a better alternative than eating veggies with pesticide residue. Keep in mind the reason why some plants (and all aromatic plants) have Essential Oils and it will not be a big surprise to anyone. I'll make a more detailed post on this later .. and include info on what we have done. We were flying by the seat of our pants .. both Tanya and I have experience at gardening but not much with Organic gardening. This year's garden was an experiment and we have learned what to do again and what to avoid. I'll advise those that might not know that its not too late to plant a garden .. its just too late to plant an early garden. You can plant a Fall garden and get some mighty fine veggies .. in fact, many will do better in the Fall. I'll also advise how folks can start to get ready for Spring planting .. how to start creating a Compost pile now. I'll close by saying that not only is home gardening gonna save you a lotta money .. but any veggie you grow is gonna be a heckuva lot more safe and nutritious and its gonna taste a heckuva lot better than any produce you get from the market .. or any frozen or canned goods. Of course, if you freeze, pickle, can and dry your garden veggies you will get the next best thing to what you got fresh from your garden and in almost all cases freezing your own results in more nutritious meals than will even the so-called fresh veggies you get from a Green Grocer .. cause veggies start to lose a lot within hours of being harvested and those in the market will almost always be days old by the time they hit the shelf. Got posts & orders to get to now .. plus today we are in the midst of freezing Okra, Green Beans, Brussels Sprouts and Sweet Banana Peppers and pickling Cucumbers, Green Beans, Green Tomatoes & Sweet Peppers. > Kathleen Petrides > Bead Hussy > http://www.BeadHussy.com Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch .. http://www.AV-AT.com
