Are these oils OK for kids?

Hi, I'm new here and seeking aromatherapy info.

I came across a recipe for natural insect (mosquito) repellent that

is as follows:

2 oz. fractionated coconut oil

60 drops catnip E.O.

20 drops Lemon Eucalyptus E.O.

10 drops Lavender E.O.

Can anyone tell me if this combination of oils is safe for children

(mine happen to be 4, 6 and 8)?

I know the lavender would be OK, but I'm not sure about catnip or

lemon eucalyptus. I would also like to know about lemongrass for

children, which I've seen recommended as a repellent. I don't see

them listed as safe for kids in Valerie Ann

Worwood's " Aromatherapy for the Healthy Child " , so I'm hesitant to

make a natural repellent for my kids from these oils.

Any info would be much appreciated. I'm anxious to replace DEET, but

I don't want to replace one hamful substance with another.

Thanks,

Angela

I shore as shootin wouldn't put in sixty drops of Catnip.

PEEEEEEEEEEYEEWWWWWW. Not to mention overdoing it at wee bit.

I personally would cut the catnip down to 10 drops.

And yes, Lemon Euc is fine for small children.

Also when you make the oil up, spray it on the clothes, hats and shoes, not

the skin. this minimizes any risk of irritation or sensitization.

HAHAHAHAHA, Kathleen. But seriously, thanks for asking, Angela. 60

drops of Catnips is overkill for anyone and shouldn't be used on the

skin. As a SPACE spray, perhaps, but not going on someone's skin.

If you want to add a little Citronella to it you can spray the inside

of your tent and surroundings. I went to Maui in 1998 and I had a

similar spray my friend and I made up. My daughter was 2 years old

then. My friend and I brought these oils (no Catnip) and I sprayed

the tent down and my duffle bag with them. What was worse, we were

off the Hana Highway the rainiest part of Maui, so it was full of

skeetas. My friend and I made up another blend without the

Citronella and diluted it down for my daughter some Lavender and

(heck, I forgot what concoction I made), but I rubbed her down, my

friend and me down with it in the morning and in the evening (skeeta

time). Oh my friend and daughter were fine--not one bite. Perhaps I

should have made myself a stronger batch. The skeetas ate my butt

up. I counted 21 bites. They loved me.
