Guest guest
Hi The Sleep-Enhancing Effect of Valerian Inhalation and Sleep-Shortening Effect of Lemon Inhalation.* *July 2006 http://chemse.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/31/8/731 This study looks at possible alternatives to tranquillisers and sedatives (performed on rats) and concludes: " Although the mechanism by which the olfactory stimulation produces its effect on the sleep is currently unclear and further studies are needed, the present results may provide useful information that can lead to the clinical application of odorants in the future. " It also states " In the anosmic rats, a significant effect of odorants on the pentobarbital sleep time was not seen. " My only experience working with a a person who suffered anosmia (clinically diagnosed as having no sense of smell at all) was more positive. In her own opinion she experienced a better sleep quality when using a blend of rose and spikenard (even tho she could not smell it) before going to bed, than on the nights when she didn't use it. (It could also be that on the nights she didn't use the blend she was more stressed anyway, which may have affected sleep with or without the blend.)
