I agree with the logic you presented. And I too have never seen any research that addresses the effect of Essential Oils on birds. A question that comes to mind is .. do people in Beijing, Mexico City and Istanbul keep parakeets. I expect that the answer is YES for the first two cities and I am absolutely certain that it is YES for Istanbul. Let that lay for a while. ;-) I read the article the Vet has at the above link .. she seems to have their ducks in line for sure. I also read the part about household cleaning materials and aerosols and plug in room fragrances,. etc. Basically .. toxins .. and for sure there is research showing that birds have a tough time dealing with many toxins .. but then the Vet went into the elimination of Red Mites. To keep Red Mite <http://www.solwayparrotclub.co.uk/minor_ailments.htm#Red Mite>out of your Nests/NestBoxes/Aviaries - You can make your own spray by adding 20 drops of Eucalyptus natural Oil and 20 drops of Tea Tree (both can be bought from Health Shops or Chemists) into 250ml of warm water in a (clean) spray bottle then spray your nests/boxes etc. before you put the bedding in. (DO NOT SPRAY if EGGS in the Nests) . The Tea Tree is a Natural Antiseptic, as is the Eucalyptus which also has the added advantage of being good for the birds' breathing and an effective germicidal and anti-bacterial. So it appears as if she is one who leans toward " If its Natural its Safe. " Not necessarily true that. There is a good reference publication that shows the oral and dermal toxicity levels of over 200 EO based on the old LD-50 testing system that I think is no longer used on animals. That publication is Martin Watt's Safety Manual .. Plant Aromatics. http://www.aromamedical.com/paper.html The reasons canaries were used in coal mines is because they visibly demonstrated signs of distress when exposed to toxic the gases .. carbon monoxide and methane. Canaries have been replaced in the mines now ... http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/december/30/newsid_2547000/2547\ 587.stm Having had quite a few canaries and parakeets when I was younger .. and having been a heavy smoker then .. and one who used whatever came to mind to clean the home or make it smell nice and who paid absolutely no attention to toxicity in those days, I don't believe that all of the toxic conditions the Vet mentioned are as dangerous as she stated. Even knowledgeable professionals put their fingers on the scales from time to time because is the safest thing to do. Ask a lawyer for an opinion and you'll get one that will advise that you protect yourself from things that could maybe, possibly, under the right extreme circumstances and conditions .. become a potential problem. The Embassy Nurse in Ankara had a blurb in the Welcome Bulletin that advised folks to wash their veggies with Clorox if they intended to eat them raw. I lived over 26 years in Turkey and because I couldn't imagine how Clorox could taste better than Extra-Virgin Olive Oil (which, because it was unrefined was also recommended against) on a salad. So I never used Clorox and I never got sick. ;-) Many professionals in the AT community advise (for the record) that no EO should be ingested .. but they do ingest some .. they just don't trust others to know which ones should be used in what dosage .. and they don't want to appear to be suggesting/prescribing medications without a license. I reckon lots of folks .. especially professionals .. live by the rule, " Do As I Say Not As I Do " .. as do many Televangelists and a Senator from Idaho. ;-) If I had parakeets in a 1,800 to 2,000 sq. ft. room I would be less concerned about harming them with reasonable .. not constant .. use of EO than I would exposing them to the toxic air in most of the large cities in the world .. and even less concerned than I would if I had a visitor who liked to bath in perfume. Same time .. I would keep an eye on them. I would keep an eye on them (and any other pets) even if I were not using EO in the room. Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
Guest guest
Hi, A good resource is http://www.parrotparrot.com , which is considered a good source by both the LavenderCat and Cybercanine for bird health. I always wonder too, who did the vet learn their AT and do they sell any oils. Have found vets that get involved with a certain mlm, use their hype and not true research/knowledge. Sounds like a real waste of eo's, aviaries also just use plain soap and water or dishsoap to rid the mites, cleanliness and not overcrowding helps too. (My daughter did her college work experience in an aviary) Hope this may help too, just to add to Butch's informative post. Sure do like seeing some old buds here! Guest guest
Thanks so much for all the bird conversation. :-) I just love birds. We have a bunch of feeders on our porch and 14 chickens in the back yard. Now we have 2 sweet little parakeets, so I was curious.
