Guest guest
Ysha, I was wondering what you thought of this technique, below, for starting an " overdue " labor. A local woman wrote this. Once they had gone over, if they were interested in stimulating labor and everything else seemed normal, I taught them a breathing (pranayama) technique that sometimes worked to get labor going--sometimes on the spot--sometimes within hours. It involves " locks " (bandhas) using the diaphragm, the abdominal muscles, the pelvic floor diaphragm muscles and the breath in unison to increase pressure in the abdominal cavity. This pranayama is not recommended for women during any stage of pregnancy, as it can potentially stimulate miscarriage or premature labor. But once they have gone past their due date and are showing signs of impending labor (i.e. the cervix is in position, dilating, effacing, baby is in a good position, etc), and the continuance of the pregnancy causes threats of impending medical > intervention, it may be worth a try. There are also a few simple positions and some of them use opposition. But it needs to be done under the guidance of someone who knows how to do it and can monitor the intensity as it can also cause the water to break (which may be okay if they are past term and it causes labor to ensue--but I prefer that the water not break during the exercise--and none of the women I worked with experienced spontaneous breaking of water during the exercise). So if your client is still waiting and you think this may be an option for her, you can pass along the info. > > >Vicky York, IBCLC >Portland, Oregon >> >
Guest guest
Sometimes I feel I have responded too quickly to some of the questoins on this forum, as there are many quiet listeners with much more experience and training than I even probably with this. IN this case, I can only share a story I had just heard earlier this week - Dr. Lad's experience when he was told his wife had cerebro-pelvic disproportion and needed to have surgical intervention, her labor would not succeed. He asked how much time they had and was given an hour. He taught her then the yogic breath practice called kapalabhati and then the so-hum meditation. She did it and then went into a deep meditative silence before expanding quickly to give birth to their son, to the doctor's surprise! That and the one your friend described are commonly contraindicated in pregnancy just because they can increase the apana vayu or downward subdosha of vata which governs childbirth (and other functions for us). Let us know any such stories, please! Warmly, Ysha > Ysha, I was wondering what you thought of this technique, below, for starting an " overdue " labor. A local woman wrote this.
