Guest guest
Hi Ysha- I realize this falls outside of " post partum " but I can't seem to find anything in the few resources I have, for an ayurveda way to induce labor? I have a woman who's due date was Friday, and she would prefer not to be induced allopathically (ie: pitocin)... she has tried being intimate with her partner, but it hasn't sped things along at all. As of Thursday she was 2cm. Any suggestions? Thanks! Sushila. (postpartum doula and new correspondence student) Sushila - THere are several suggestions off the top of my head. And in your essential oils unit under birth/labor there are quite a few references to things like Clary Sage essential oil, using the ankle uterine points and in capsules with peppermint (Actually., Dr. Young created a blend that worked well for his wife in her 50s with her babies and is our standard now, called Scleressence - might not be available to you in time unless you post on the forum, greaterjoy for someone who has it in your area; taking castor oil; long walks; how about a bowl of stewed apples and prunes or raisins with cinnamon and clove? Some midwives use suppositories with one of the EFA oils, evenig primrose, right in the cervix - I don't know how that is done (to dialate). If she has a lot of upper body heat recently, strong cup or two of fenugreek tea may help. I'd be adding good dose of shatavari and ashwagandha and sweetener to taste, and a tsp ghee. Increasing apan pran is part of the strategy, relaxation another. Also, does she have any unresolved issues around sexual abuse? And Baby may be choosing his/her time, you know? As long as water hasn't broken and she is in her window, I'd use the natural options and then let Nature choose the time. Let me know what you can do here and how it works, ok? May I post this to share on the forum? Ysha Yes, please post to the group! Great ideas... I was just thinking about clary sage! Yes, I will let her know about a few of these to try... I am flying out of town early tomorrow morning and will be returning Wednesday at the latest (I need to take care of my father's estate). I wanted to have some suggestions for her when I return, if she hasn't already delivered. I think Baby is just taking his time. We've dialogued a bit about any emotional stressors and she seems to be very open and relaxed, save for a bit of first-baby impatience. When I get back I will visit her with some stewed fruits and the fenugreek tea concoction, if she is seeming pitta-aggravated (she has been having insomnia, and I think that might be why) and bring some castor oil... also, I will check her acupressure points- trying to explain them wasn't working out so well. Thank you for the suggestions! Hopefully her doctor won't convince her to go the pitocin route. Warmly, Sushila. Insomnia more normally a vata aggravation, and the ashwagandha among dietary and lifestlye things also is likely to help that. Also if she is at all constipated, this will make sleep more difficult. Shatavari is classical for the pitta and tonic prenatally and postpartum, and supportive for reproductive system. Both will be calming. There may be more specific ayurvedic supports Im not thinking of which are probably already posted here on the forum! - I've seen fenugreek and a hot soothing bath bring on overdue labor and the mom never needed to take the castor oil, in a mama with unusual upper body heat. Fenugreek has a special ability therein to bring it down, even though it has some warming property otherwise it can bring down a fever sometimes also I hear. Guest guest
It seems so soon to start pushing the baby who surely must know when it's time. Guest guest
I agree, that it is too early to be pushing labor. 2 cm is great! Its really ok not to go on the EDD. Maybe it would be a good idea to talk with her about how " normal " this is. I would bargain for more time with the Dr. Most woman dont have there baby on the estimated day, anyhow. I think i have read in one of my midwifery texts that a first time mom can typically go 1 week overdue, considered normal. Unless, there is an issue they are concerned about. Also, its really important that she is drinking plenty of fluids.
