Guest guest
A friend sent this alert - http://www.netwellness.org/healthtopics/gumdisease/gdgumdiseaseandpregnancy.cfm http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34979552 The immune system relaxes slightly during pregnancy so as not to harm the baby. When you have periodontal disease your gums are more likely to bleed. When this happens this bacteria can enter the blood stream, travel through the mother's body, and enter the placenta to trigger infection as the bacteria cross the placenta, causing preterm birth or death. Though not a normal scenario, the news focus of the second story brings to light important prenatal care issues. What does Ayurveda do with gingivitis? I'm not sure. We do have a simple practice for dental health of oil gargling or oil pulling (garshana?) as it is sometimes called. If my gums get to bleeding a little, oil swishing/pulling and my water pic clear the problem quickly. (I so dislike flossing, was so happy to discover these substitutes). Oil gargling has been traditionally used to strengthen the teeth, gums and jaw, improve the voice and remove wrinkles from the cheeks. Ayurveda advises oil gargling - or " oil pull " as it is sometimes referred to - " to purify the taste-buds and detoxify the entire system. " The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from the body through the saliva. (google brought a number of references, including this simple enthusiastic article - http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/766667/health_benefits_of_doing_an_oil_\ gargle.html?cat=51 Usually sesame -til - oil is preferred, which includes some antibacterial properties.
