Guest guest
Ysha- I would like to talk to you about my situation personally, but am posting here too, in case it will benefit others. I visited a uro-gynecologist specialist here today at USCSD and she said I have a tear in my sphincter muscle causing some incontinence. (4th degree tear.) It's very depressing... But I do think insurance would cover this if it's true that I need surgery. I want to see what you think. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this to me or seen it, because I've seen a lot of OB's and specialists since Isha was born and thought I was passing gas rectally through all this time, but it's possible this happened with Anjali. Although I had a relatively easy quick water birth and barely had any pain afterwards healing. It was ten times easier than Isha's with the episiotomy! The stitches were minor with this one. I did have this feeling she was about to come out of my butt during labor but I just did the reverse pressure. Do you know if there's any way to heal muscle in the sphincter that has seperated without surgery? I only notice the incontinence if my stools are loose. I knew the recto/vaginal wall was thin and had thought gas was passing through but my OB had recc'd a berennium enema and they didn't see any when they did the x-ray with dye. I also had a hole in the perennium but this doctor says I don't have a perennium. She also says I have one hole with a tiny bit of skin between them... My midwife has done lots of follow up with me and also did stitches of the perennium after Anjali and never noticed these things. I need to get more opinions and make sure this was a correct finding but would love any insight! I can't remember the recipe of oils that I used last year. This doctor said I will need to build my vaginal estrogen if I do the surgery and I don't want to use the mainstream one that is soy based. Is there another you can recc'd? I also interviewed Dr. Red Alinsod last year in OC and liked him although he's really into plastics and making it all look perfect. That could be a perc. but I don't want to do anything un-necessary. If you can recc'd any good surgeons in this field in S. CA that would also be helpful. Let me know if you have an opening next week to discuss this further. Thanks! (Your candle for Anjali helped too...I had such a quick and easy labor! You're so sweet to think of us!) Blessings, Nitya
Guest guest
Nitya, Go to a colorectal surgeon and rule out a fistula. Whoever did the episiotomy may have cut the wall between the vagina and rectum. Sometimes it heals but you may need surgery. The OB's are done with you after they do this and don't give much info. It's the colorectal surgeon who knows all about it. I don't know that much about it, being a LC, but I just had a client with this issue and she was in a lot of pain, was frustrated and getting little from her OB., I wonder if OB's don't like to admit they goofed with the episiotomy. That's why you want to go with the most experienced OB in the practice, especially in learning institutions. That's why I like home births. Midwives can often prevent episiotomies in the first place. Good luck with this frustrating problem. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this when trying to enjoy the postpartum time. Guest guest
Dear Nitya - You give me much more credit than is due, my dear! Vicky is right, you will need to consult on a number of these things with - I'd choose someone who is known to be the best specialist in your area. AM assuming you are still referring to the anal sphincter being torn. Quite a disappointing thing to have to deal with anytime, especially now. HOw many weeks postpartum are you at this point? And have you been able to get an assessment on how bad is the tear? Bad enough if the wall is also torn. I know we did have some good results last year was it? in the wake of your son Isha's birth, with the previous/related condition of a hole in the wall, which wasn't about the spincter at that time, and you knew another vaginal birth was likely to create more challenges. Yes, the alternative methods you worked with might be interesting to everyone and what you experienced. If it were me I too would be looking at a layered approach, knowing there are some things docs don't know, and some things for sure we don't know. Tissue healing when that fragile - I really don't know, we can only offer some adjunctive supports and in the meantime, take care of the crisis with the best medicine for it, which is allopathy's specialty (crisis care, and their skill level is amazing). Remember Ayurveda uses surgery sometimes - in fact there are modern surgical techniques which come from the 6,000 year old medical texts of Sushrut. There is a time for everything. My guess is torn muscle needs the suturing! We might gain some adjunct help from some sort of use of the mamsa dhatu (muscle tissue)specific herbs in some oil administration probably vaginal, and you and I both are likely to add to it 2-3 organic essential oils also specific to tissue healing and antiseptics, in a small, very soft organic cotton unbleached pittu, vaginally at night and perhaps napping in the earlier day also. I believe your lochia is done now and this would work? The only way I would know to guess a dosage and time frame is kinesiology, unless the vaidyas have some suggestions here. So glad your birth was ralatively easy and you got the waterbirth you wanted. I received your text announcement on my cell phone, but didn't know who it was from - could only guess! Your facebook pictures of you and your baby are beautiful - it is so wonderful to get to put a face to who you are. Thank you for sharing such a personal case. I know there are many who have this challenge and as practitioners it is good to be able to discuss it. And it seems to me, with the challenges you presented last year, you have really done very well! Warmly, Ysha Call me after 3:30 Wednesday or Friday if you want to book some time next week for help thinking this through it some more. > Ysha- I would like to talk to you about my situation personally, but am posting here too, in case it will benefit others. > I visited a uro-gynecologist specialist here today at USCSD and she said I have a tear in my sphincter muscle causing some incontinence. Guest guest
Thanks! This is very helpful! I've been talking to Urogynecologists mostly. I have seen two and wanted to get a third opinion so I will look for one of these in S. CA. I am also curious about robotic surgery. There is a group of urogyn.'s that research this here too in La Jolla. I might get a perinneum sling in the meantime while I try the natural approach, so I'm not putting too much pressure on things carrying baby around and walking for exercise, but I feel like if it's not comfortable by Febuary, which is 4 months postpartum, then I probably need surgery.
