Guest guest
I don't know if she is able apply oil in that region, but sesame oil is a good antibacterial but is heating. Coconut oil might be soothing because of its cooling nature. I am so sorry to read about this mother. Blessings upon her... - Vicky York ayurveda Thursday, September 17, 2009 5:13 PM PerinatalAyurveda forum fistula question A postpartum client of mine has a recto-vaginal fistula. Evidently when sewing up the episiotomy they took a stitch right through the rectal wall. Now fecal matter seeps through to the vagina when the mom has a bowel movement and there is a lot of pain there. All the drs. can talk about is pain meds and maybe surgery in the future. Does anyone know of anything soothing and antibacterial that could help this healing process? Also any diet recommendations? Momma is so scared of becoming the slightest bit constipated. And yet if the stool is too soft there is more likelihood of the stool leaking across into the vagina. Guest guest
Yes - If it were me I " d be using a vaginal suppository at night - something like sesame oil or better, herbalized with tissue healing property herbs like comfrey root or licorice and soaking alittle pittu - piece of soft undyed flannel. Am sure there are other herbs which are also known for helping tissues knit back together. And I'd of course add a couple essential oils into the carrier. Helichrysum comes first to mind if it is a good one, has amazing tissue healing properties; lavender (not lavendin, and not synthetic), and myrrh. all provide some antimicrobial protection also. I " d have to look up which oils are specific to e-coli - that info is available too. Nitya has experience very specifically with this problem, also a friend of hers. I'm not sure if she is listening - but would expect she is willing to share her experience. I " m thinking a daily fruit only not cold smoothie or just water if she will do - blended with a TBS of psyllium seed husk and pinch of salt - stool will be soft but formed. Kind Regards to this dear Mama - Ysha > I don't know if she is able apply oil in that region, but sesame oil is a good antibacterial but is heating. Guest guest
Psyllium seed husk would indeed be helpful for constipation. Improving digestion is a real cure for constipation (for long term benefits). I remember a rectovaginal fistula case that was discussed in a clinical meeting of Vaidyas here at Pune. Avagaha with medicated oil was reported to be useful in this case. Sitz bath with decoctions of healing herbs such as triphala, daruharidra, should help. There are some internal medicines that help to heal the fistula (e.g. Lodhra, daruharidra, etc.). A pichu (tampon) soaked in jatyadi oil should help for local application to assist wound healing. Guest guest
Dr. Thite - These look like simple remedies if we have access to these herbs... People are often shy to ask - do you know another name for these? Avagaha daruharidra Lodhra jatyadi oil We definitely have access to the amazingly diverse gifts of Triphala. Thank you! Guest guest
Hello, Immersion of body part of (whole body ) in medicated liquid such as oil or decoctions is called as Avagaha. If the liquid is warm, it is called as avagaha sweda. Even sitz bath is a kind of avagaha. Jatyadi oil is an oil preparation which is made using many herbs including jaati. Daruharidra is berberis aristata and lodhra is simpiocos rasimosa Dr. Thite
Guest guest
Thank you Dr. Thite - There are so many gifts from your culture and training. FYI the group, Berberis we have from Banyan et al, lodhra we probably have by yet another name, my teachers have spoken of it. Jatyadi sounds estoteric kindof like one of those special classical formulas such as mahanarayan oil though different use. Sitz we all know about - good to be on same page. Immersion in medicated oil is bound to be lovely for so many things ... am actually looking forward to a shirodhara this am. (shiro = head, dhara = pouring of oil there) Namaskar Ysha > Immersion of body part of (whole body ) in medicated liquid such as oil or > decoctions is called as Avagaha.
