PreNatal Ayurvedic Diet

Essentially, there are several things to look for in substitution for what milk

provides in the prenatal diet, and may come from multiple sources for best

balance. - cooling, creamy, ojas enhancing sattvic, light protein, calming,

serotonin enhancing as well as vata pacifying are among the virtues of milk

properly used and proper quality. There are other ways of course to get these

qualities.

Although my default substitution is almond milk, things like hemp milk, cashew

or hazlenut or brazil or pumpkin seed - things like this - can all be used for a

nourishing creamy beverage. Also, it depends what other qualities would be

indicated. If pitta is high (common anyway in first trimester), and in general

anyway, I'd make it with soaked dates or other pitta and vata reducing ojas

enhancing delicious nourishing ingredients. Coconut water or milk will be

really soothing and the water, electrolyte rich, but is not a protein and would

be used, as would the nut milks also, with some additionals in the diet so that

balanced protein is included in the day.

Sometimes a good barley, rice or other grain based " milk " is satisfying also,

again though it doesn't inherently include protein unless a mung or garbanzo

type flour is also cooked in and taste-balanced with seasoning/sweet/pinch salt.

THere are some nice recipes that were shared here for " horchatta " and related

recipes last year. Raw or cooked versions may depend on the person, prakruti

and vikruti.

Any other ideas would be welcomed of course!
