Guest guest
Hi Betsy - I just pulled out Dr. Lad's home remedies book - it is such a resource, do you have it? He says some interesting things many don't know - " Fever is a sign of ama (toxins) moving in the circulatory system. Contrary to what some people believe, fever is not often a sign of infection. In some cases there IS infection, but most of the time the fever is due to toxicity in the rasa dhatu, the body's basic vital tissue. When the ama has been eliminated, the fever will subside. Don't EAT. For acute, a total fast is recommended if strong enough; if debilitated or weak (or with such a little growing one, I'd say) it is better to drink water, some kind of fruit juice, or one of the herbal teas like holy basil (tulsi) or lemongrass. NOT MILK (or other dairy), will worsen the fever and create diarrhea. Also helpful he says, simplest herbal is cilantro juice - 1 handful leaves in blender with about 1/3 cup water, blend thoroughly. Strain out pulp, adult dose is 2 tsp liquid 3X a day to help lower it. Lemongrass, tulsi and fennel in equal proportions is good for helpful herbal tea, about 1 tsp steeped per cup 10 minutes. strain and drink. THis will encourage sweat, bringing down the temp. Or 2 parts each coriander, cinnamon, and 1 part fresh ginger steeped 1 tsp in cup hot water 10 minutes, every fewhours drinks till fever breaks. Another simple one from household herbs - equal parts cumin, coriander and fennel, similar 1 tsp/cup. Grape juice with herbs (1 cup, add 1/2 tsp cumin, 1/2 tsp fennel, 1/2 tsp sandalwood powder and drink. Avoid cold drinks or foods. Any hot tea will help to kindle the body's digestivde fire (agni) and burn the ama. Don't travel or xercise. There are other suggestions also in his book, for compress if high. Many including myself have used essential oil of peppermint (a refrigerant in properties, among other things) on soles of feet if fever is spiking. Very effective to bring risky high fevers down; can repeat as needed till it breaks. The mint does not interfere with supporting the body's ability to burn ama; mint is also with pungent (penetrating) vipak (post digestive effect) and supports the process. Keep us posted how your little guy is doing? The lethargy is natural when body is required to deal with so much inner work suddenly. It may be there is some infection going around that is complicating or precipitated the body's need to burn the already present toxins. Fever is heating, and signs of higher pitta also natural (red eyes, red cheeks, ama being worked on in the circulation). There is a valuable little book out of print but often avail on Amazon, by a pediatrician of 30 years, Dr. Mendellson (sp?). How to have a healthy child in spite of your doctor is the name. THe interesting thing is, he doesn't even get as far as herbs or other natural remedies, except to make clear guidance by his experience, when you do or don't need medical help. And when the grandmother down the street can give you better advice. Nice resource, for some of those questions around how serious might these symptoms be, and can I just lean on my ayurvedic network? Guest guest
Hello Ysha, I just realized I never wrote back to thank you! Got all caught up in baby ( as usual) and it slipped my mind. Thanks so much for all the great research and info. He ended up having a fever for 2 days then it was gone. I think you were intuitively tapping into little Kai though with the toxicity in the rasa dhatu. The morning of the fever he had gotten into a box of see's chocolates (he has good taste). Normally of course he never has any chocolate let alone sugar aside from fresh juice and fruit. I think that was the toxic invasion right there. Poor little guy. I felt like mom of the year on that one. I took your advice on the various herbal preparation teas and that seemed to help alot. Definitely got things moving through his body. Thanks again, Betsy On Mar 17, 2009, at 9:32 PM, Ysha Oakes wrote: > Hi Betsy - > > I just pulled out Dr. Lad's home remedies book - it is such a > resource, do you have it? Guest guest
HI Betsy - It really wasn't my intuition, was Dr. Lad's notes that helped you. All that chocolate would do it for me too....
