We need mucous in many places, so we don't want to dry the body completely up from it. In fact, that could contribute to dry skin, dry or sticky cough (vs wet or productive), itchiness, rash, heartburn, diarrhea, even continual mucous when there is no infection and other recognized symptoms! Basic common sense functional concepts first 1. Excess happens when the body's " agni " or natural digestive fires – or enzymes and enzyme strength (which has many layers to it) when they are low, irregular, or blocked. 2. It is also related to our " AHHHH! " for LIFE. Notice the passionate ones tend to naturally handle more, better, and run a hotter digestion! 3. That's long as they (or any body type) haven't broken enough rules to accumulate some kinds of " ama " (incomplete products of digestion or other toxins). 4. Overloads of ama specifically in respiratory system, and it's channels nourishing and cleansing them too, both feeds the disease organisms, and makes tendency to phlegm. In the arteries, makes placque and other free radicals. In colon, gas, constipation or diarrhea, even headaches, insomnia, etc. In joints, you get it? 5. Yes, then it happens also when the body is protecting itself, though usually, the disease organisms come first to feast and then it gets complicated. Key qualitative influences from food and drink 1. quality • fresh vs leftover, cheap/processed or healthy/organic, made with love or neg emotions etc makes a diff • Example: fresh dairy (cheese, yogh etc) makes less than fermented, with weak digestion • Heavy, slow, cold, slimy, static, cloudy, sometimes oily, soft or dense are some of the 20 Ayurvedically defined gunas or qualities which can increase mucous, especially if agni or ama or weather, other things below team up • Light, sharp, hot, dry, rough, liquid, mobile, subtle, clear tend to decrease 2. quantity • we all know how we feel overeating… increase in gas alone shows poor digestion. • Too little of certain nutrients is also significant. Examples: i. For mucous, even too much drying/directly acidic or heating foods can even create bounce back protective mucous. Corey had chronic sinus issues the Doc finally identified as too much heat in the stomach, and imbalance of the energies pushing it upwards. Mucous in sinuses protected as the drying heating influences was pushed out, making Body think this is how we cleanse this stuff! ii. Sweets with not enough fats/proteins will make more mucous! iii. Those of you who know about the " flaxed cheese " type recipes I've been working with, heard how fresh cheese or yoghurt alone may cause mucous and is much less likely prepared with good flax oil! 3. time of eating • digestion is strongest/for big meal, from about 10A to 2PM • Body needs 4-6 hours to digest a full meal. Meals before that create ama. • Appetite before that indicates parasites, yeast in gut, emotions, weak blood sugar response, stress (cortisol levels get jacked from many things actually –processed sugar, caffienne, antidepressants too) and if frequently, whip the liver/pancreas into fatigue) and sometimes need for more of certain nutrients. • Body needs 2-3 hours before bed to properly digest a meal. Nightie night is for other metabolising work, including reset and cleanse. • Those with sleep disturbance including elders and skinnie Minnies, are often either high in ama, or need a nightcap of nourishing mineral rich easily digested creamy/protein/sweet drink like hot milk, almond " milk " , or maybe just hot Mag-cal or personalized herbal tea. 4. temperature • Cold temp foods and drinks (even salad!) oriental cultures know these are hard on the fragile digestive system, and weaken digestive strength further. • Hot temp reduces mucous; supports agni and helps the body " melt " , make flowing out instead of sticky, and metabolize it 5. combinations of foods – ok, that's a whole nother discussion. For instance, • Digestive enzymes for starches (potatoes, yams) is so different from that of grains, that they interfere and tend to make digestion heavy or incomplete. • Different animal proteins (egg, red, poultry, fish, dairy) not so wise together • Milk or yoghurt with banana taken regularly is carcinogenic, per Dr. Lad • Fruit smoothies with dairy, not wise on regular basis (soaked dates sometimes best choice, ok). • Milk with salt, sour or astringent tastes does not digest well (full cream ok) • Some are bigger issues than others. Regular poor combinations translate to more ama on some tissue or system level, weaker appetite, perhaps more mucous. 6. liquids • again, cold temp, or excess with a meal, increase • hot/warm temp drinks and foods that are liquid reduce 7. even our attention, when separated much from body needs by heavy emotions while eating, or standing or multi tasking can weaken benefit and contribute to ama ok, enough on this for now! next, foods that increase/decrease mucous In your service, Ysha
