Guest guest
Greetings all, My name is Ananga-manjari. My family live in Southern, NJ (USA) where I teach pre/postnatal and adult yoga, serve as a pre/postnatal doula, teach yogic philosophy, and offer Wholistic & Ayurvedic Thai massage. Is there any information in Ayurveda about the benefits placentaphagia and/or placental encapsulation? Thanks & be well, Ananga-manjari
Guest guest
Hello Ananga-manjari, I am not a practitioner of ayurveda so I can't contribute to that connection, however I had quite the experience with placentaphagia. I hemorrhaged severely after the placental delivery, and was almost transfused. If I had delivered in a hospital, I would no doubt have been transfused. I had decided ahead of time that I wanted to encapsulate my placenta and also have a raw smoothie immediately after birth. This was the best prenatal decision I made. When the bleeding was finally under control, my husband made me a smoothie and I could acutually feel myself coming back to earth so to speak. My vision which was blurry became clear and my pressure went up drastically. I can't remember the exact numbers but I do remember at one point my pressure was something over 40. Bad news. There was also the administration of petossin and amagen I believe but they had already tried that once prior to my ingestion of the placenta to no avail. The weeks following my birth were trying to say the least but each time I took a capsule I felt a decided difference in my vitality. My rbc levels went back to normal within 3 days postpartum and my milk came in strong on day 2 pp. Even my midwife was shocked with the results, given how much I bled. On a more emotional note, with my first child I experienced " baby blues " for about 2 weeks pp. I had absolutely none of that with this birth. As a matter of fact it was nothing short of blissful. I too would like to hear the history/connection between ayurveda and placentaphagia, I know historically it was used in many cultures and was a prominant practice in Chinese medicine. I think when cultures were becoming " civilized " this practice was considered " primitive " and was therefore practiced in secret. Unfortunately even today that taboo is very strong. I believe it is one of the strongest medicines for women pp, and hope to see it become more mainstream.
