Guest guest
Thanks to Gaura's husband for catching this in the news: Urgent alert http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/05/23/fda.nipple.cream.ap/index.html?iref=mpstory\ view FDA warns of harmful nipple cream * Story Highlights * Mommy's Bliss Nipple Cream has been taken off market * Ingredients in cream could sicken infants, FDA says * Potentially harmful ingredients are chlorphenesin, phenoxyethanol * FDA says don't use the cream, consult a doctor if you have problems WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration on Friday warned women not to use or purchase Mommy's Bliss Nipple Cream, marketed by MOM Enterprises Inc. of San Rafael, California. The cream, promoted to nursing mothers to help soothe dry or cracked nipples, contains ingredients that may cause respiratory distress, vomiting and diarrhea in infants, the agency said. The potentially harmful ingredients in the cream are chlorphenesin and phenoxyethanol. " FDA is particularly concerned that nursing infants are being unwittingly exposed by their mothers to this product with dangerous side effects, " said Janet Woodcock, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. " Additionally, these two ingredients may interact with one another to further compound and increase the risk of respiratory depression in nursing infants. " The company has stopped selling the cream. The FDA said consumers should stop using the cream and consult a doctor if they experience problems or believe that their infant may have experienced problems due to the product. Mothers whose children may have suffered adverse effects because of this product should contact the FDA's MedWatch at 800-332-1088.
Guest guest
as a general rule I don't think anything should be on mothers nipples except breast milk. Even Medela's lanolin is made from sheep's wool, not good for those allergic to wool. Besides ointments hold in yeast, bacteria and moisture. Better clean and dry. Studies showed, a while back, that lanolin helps wound healing to occur a tiny bit faster than no lanolin for moms whose nipples are cracked and bleeding and/or scabbed over. But far better to keep nipples clean and dry and improve the latch in the first place to prevent cracks, thus avoiding a need for chemicals, drugs, etc. Vicky York, IBCLC, CPD Postpartum Care Services Portland, Oregon http://mypeoplepc.com/members/vmyork/ http://vmyork.ikarma.com/id269
