Guest guest
Dear Group, Baby " Ria " was born 2 days ago by cesarean. Mom is unable to produce any milk yet. Mom is also allergic to fenugreek. I heard that fenugreek is good for producing breast milk. Is there any other herbs mom can take? Baby Ria has a lot of diarrhea and the hospital had changed two formulas (milk and soy based) but she seems to get gas and diarrhea. We are looking for some suggestions for good formula. Someone suggested Carnation good start and gripe water. Please advice. Thank you, Dhara Best Regards, Dhara Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Search. Guest guest
Why would a 2 day old baby be getting any formula if she is breastfeeding and getting colostrum? No wonder her system is messed up already. Not to mention nipple confusion from getting bottle nipples when she should be getting ONLY the breast. Mama only needs for a lactation consultant to be helping her with breastfeeding, don't worry about fenugreek, if she is allergic, the main thing is working on the latch and getting the baby to breast a lot. C-sections often seem to cause the milk to be delayed in coming in, but no worry, just keep her at the breast. Even sugar water would have been better than formula at this point. And even if formula had been necessary because of a complete inability to nurse, the baby should only be getting less than 2 ounces every 3 hours in a bottle. Other herbs can help besides fenugreek, see below. a.. Evening primrose, Fenugreek, blessed thistle, milk thistle, alfalfa, astragalus root burdock, nettle, vervain, goats rue, especially for minimal breast tissue. Try these first for mild milk insufficiency. Excessive or misused herbs and infusions can be harmful to mom and/or babe. b.. Domperidone (only galactagogue actually proven to be effective but who knows what kind of studies " proved " that) Vicky - Dhara Jani ayurveda Thursday, March 20, 2008 1:39 PM PerinatalAyurveda forum New Born & Good Formula Dear Group, Baby " Ria " was born 2 days ago by cesarean. Guest guest
Dear Dhara ! Here's a tried and true and simple solution, which has worked extremely well with the group of mothers with whom we have influence. It's really simple Just arrange for Ria's mum to eat significant amounts of raw spinach salad. The results are usually very rapid -- the usual being that the milk often flows from the breast spontaneously!. This works very well for milk shortage in any stage of breastfeeding Much love and good luck Mike and Stephie Prema Ayurveda Auckland New Zealand
Guest guest
Mike and Sephie, Dhara, I'd avoid this recipe if at all possible. We may choose to do anything that works if that is all we have, and certainly spinach is readily available in most places. But first few days it is not only very valuable to avoid such heat producing vegetables as dark leafy vegetables (until the lochia has receded to second stage, at least, one of my teachers says about 10 days on these foods) but that raw spinach salad is SURE to upset both mom and Baby tummies with tons of gas. Most potent lactation supports outside of the recs Vicky has offered are the herb Shatavari (wild Asparagus root) also available through chinese pharmacists/herb stores under a different name. Latin name asparagus racemosis, they will recognize. We usually start with this one around 9 or 10 days (and the 10 day growth spurt), or if before certain with strong digestive support along with, even black pepper. Long pepper/pippali, ginger, cardamom, some nutmeg if bowels are moving 2-3 times a day, clove, those kinds of things will help her slow digestive fire rekindle and be able to use the shatavari or other herbs. I have not had chance to use the goat's rue, which I hear is also very potent, but do not know other properties. The thistle varieties need to be respected also for their vata increasing bitterness (bitter is from air and space element, creating increase of cold, gas, dryness, disconnected and empty expereinces) promoting properties in addition to their strong lactaton enhancement - in other words, create balance as needed and take the mom's constitution aND imbalances into account. Choose properties for soothing, warm, oily and moist together as much as possible for experiences, internal and external. Though they may not help her directly " make milk " they will support both the lactation and let down, as well as relaxed approach to her mothering that enhances good breastfeeding and milk production. If the docs are listening, they may offer some temporary supports for Baby in transition if colostrum is not for some very unusual reason not happening, or actual lactation delayed longer. Hydration and that super rich food called colostrum are the main things to watch for with baby.
