Guest guest
Hi Jessica; Oh, those middle pregnancy weeks are the best! Yes, brahmi is very gentle and safe for pregnancy. Especially wonderful for first trimester natural pitta conditions, for pitta body type/vikruti, for pitta season, and for depressed mood (also good then to regularly sniff a few drops 2-3 times a day). ONe of my teachers says (not relative to perinatal, just in general) she finds Brahmi contraindicated with manic-depressives, though another finds it useful in complement with other herbs and treatment modalities. The medicated ghee will usually keep longer than a medicated (herbalized) oil, though according to Dr. Todd Caldecott, sesame oil has some ability to self protect with some special antioxidant property even when heated. I keep the oils refrigerated if there is extra amount, and over time find still the sesame oil can go funky. That seems more a function (for both) of, if there was still some moisture in the herbs when made that did not get filtered out. Smell it, and see how you feel. Depends especially with the oil if kept through hot weather. Good ghee is sometimes kept for decades for special medicinal uses; I've stored several pounds to add to from time to time for family medicinal uses in the future! Blessings! Ysha > I am wondering whether brahmi is safe during pregnancy -- I have some brahmi ghee for internal use as well as some brahmi oil for my body/scalp, and if they are safe I'd love to use them. I'm 22 weeks along with baby #2, if that makes a difference. > > Also, how long do medicated ghees and body oils last without

Guest guest
Dear Rebecca! They say 100 year old ghee cures a large list of diseases of vata, pitta and kapha, but I don't have the details and won't be here to test it. IN our notes from Ayurveda 1, we have some count on it. I don't know what the betweens ages are about except that 5 year old ghee feels very good on my skin. At first it will smell a little funny, then gets more pure smelling, I don't know what happens to it, except that it begins to turn more white. Yes, it took me a long time to resolve to make some and put it away, not use it. I did special investment batches for it and then boxed and forgot about it. Will have to let the vaidyas comment more if they will be so kind. Love, Ysha > Tell me again what happens with age of ghee, I remember learning this too, but can't seem to keep it around long enough to save any!! lol
Guest guest
Dear all, Purana Ghruta, i.e., old ghee is described in Charaka samhita in chapter 9, shlokas 59 through 62. This chapter deals with causes, pathogenesis, and treatment of Unmada (which covers most psychologic illnesses). While describing general treatment of Unmada, importance of old ghee is stressed by Charaka. Old ghee helps balance all three doshas (tridoshaghna). It is especially useful for Graha Chikitsa and apasmara (epilepsy). Internal use gives better results. This ghee is medhya (improves intelligence), this is even best for virechana (purgation). 10-year-old ghee also gives good results. This has very strong smell. This is madhur (sweet) and katu (pungent) in taste. Sushruta also has described old ghee. In addition to above qualities, he has mentioned uses such as vrana-ropana (helps wound healing). He has also given a list of diseases such as asthma, chronic cold, cough, loss of consciousness, skin ailments, exposure to poison, etc. A hundred year old ghee is best. It is said that even looking at it or touching and smelling a 100-year-old ghee helps get rid of any Graha. I was told that in ancient times they used to fill wells with ghee which remained under water for many years. They used it during wars for external application for the wounded soldiers. In current practice, use of old ghee is very limited, obviously due to non-availability. My Guru had 40-60 years old ghee with him. Even I have kept some ghee since October 1990, that is since 18 years. I have tried using this with good results in some patients. Diagnoses varied from schizophrenia to bipolar disorder. Smell of old ghee really gives some stimulation to the obliterated mind. Namaskar, C M Thite, MD
