achy after massage

Aloha Sonya,

Sure, as a massage therapist for many years I've heard

it often. It happens when toxins get " stirred " from

the massage and are not able to release from the body.

Drinking more water generally helps to flush the body

of the toxins and the pain is released. A salt bath

can also pull the toxins from the body. Epson salts

work for this, but I'm not sure they're used in

ayurvedic practices as much as Western alternative

therapies. My understanding is a dry ginger/baking

soda bath could likely offer the same relief. Another

remedy I recommend if a person reports pain after a

massage is the homeopathic remedy arnica, but again

this is not ayurvedic. Generally the person needs

more water. Sometimes to drink a large quantity of

water all at once, say up to one litre, then the pain

subsides very quickly, like within half an hour to an

hour. This last water flushing remedy also works for

those who report feeling emotional or tired after a

massage.

I hope what I share is useful.

Respectfully,

Dear Sonya

Perhaps the pressure was a little much for your client. Everyone has

different levels of tolerance and sometimes it can be a challenge to

acess what that is.

Before working on new clients I will ask about past massage

experiences. Often, folks who have felt achy the day after a treatment

will report that during a past massage, the pressure seemed a bit

much. During th massage, I make sure to check in about her level of

comfort as we go along a bit more than I normally would.

For post partum massage specifically, there is no need to 'work it

out.' The goal is to passify vata, oil the body and nurture the

mama.(right ysha?) :)

I hope this helps

Hi All;

What you say is true, Lara, though the postpartum massage Sonya has

been doing for years rarely uses much pressure except what we call a

little " leaning in " on lifting lower back near the spine, neck and

shoulder area from the extra work of holding Baby, like that. There

are a few who are Super sensitive and we keep having to go lighter

than we think is possible! but they tell us. Knowing Sonya's work, in

this case pressure is not likely the issue. Kim's suggestions are

really good, and alongside that we want to make sure bowels are moving

well.

What came to mind also is to watch that she isn't on the verge of some

flu illness.

Namaskar,

Yes, the toxic reaction some have after a massage that

leaves one achy can indeed relate to a full bowel.

Good reminder, Ysha!
