Guest guest
Namaskar, Can anyone please advise regarding a question I received yesterday from a 35 year old woman wanting to get pregnant. She says she has been constipated her entire life and recently began taking two capsules of triphala every evening. With great joy she reports this is helping her regularity. She is now wanting to conceive her first child and asked if it is safe to continue taking triphala at this time, mentioning her bottle of triphala states it is not to be taken during pregnancy. She and I would both be grateful for others expertise in this matter. Warm regards, Kim Luchau
Guest guest
Hi Jivani; A lifetime, or even a few months of chronic constipation creates impurities in the plasma and deeper tissues that will adversely effect quality of foetal development during those critical initial days after conception. The quality of DNA unfoldment is even influenced, to say nothing of the longer range. The level of toxins that are likely stored in tissues are not removed just because bowels are beginning to move for a few weeks with regularity. it is an essential beginning, but Ayurveda will advise her to do at least 1-2 seasons of Panchakarma or modified home cleansing if she has no access (see files for home panchakarma) under ayurvedic practitioner guidance at least by phone access, then ideally, some rejuvenative tonic herbs to support best quality semen and ovum for 2-3 months. The ovum which will be released for conception is among 3 or 4 which are being prepared with special attentions by the body for 3 or 4 months prior to its release, so we actually want to prepare the body several months in advance to prevent problems and give Baby best quality of Life - Mother too! I hope she will be willing to make this commitment for the considerable benefits. As women get older you know the doctors and midwives have to identify for many this gives higher risk of problems for her and baby. The panchakarma is the best style of cleansing I know of, among MANY! to address the cleansing of the deeper tissues and rejuvenate them. There may be need for other cleansings also, if one can afford it is good to test for heavy metals and parasites with an alternative practitioner who has good testing methods and labs; most allopathic practices do not pick up on many things or work with the good tests or labs. A good Ayurvedic pulse practitioner can tell if parasites are at issue, and many more things that may be important to create good balance. " PK " is also for a high percentage of women (forgive, I don't remember) the best way to reverse fertility problems, which are so often related to toxic accumulations and what we call ama in the reproductive tissues which we call the " deepest " tissue. Triphala makes the foetus restless/unsettled and increases apana vayu, the subdosha/direction of vata which governs menstruation, elimination and childbirth. It is contraindicated for pregnancy for real according to perinatal Ayurvedic physician Dr. Sarita Shrestha. So is castor oil by same reasoning though not so astringent. Best choices at this time by my understanding are stewed fruits and extra warm moisture and oiliness in the foods. Guest guest
Hi Ysha, Thank you kindly for your informative response. I will pass it on to this woman. Somebody locally offers PK at a reasonable price and there are many others offering PK at USA resort spa prices, so she has some local options. She recently had two colonics. I saw her before and after. I was concerned the colonics were aggravating vata. Her breathing became more difficult, she reported, after the colonics and the musculature around her neck and shoulders hardened and became painful. I suggested she take two weeks off before doing her third colonic (she purchased a series of three) and try castor oil packs. When you mention that castor oil makes the foetus restless, would this also apply to using castor oil externally. She also has a history of asthma. I will suggest the stewed fruit and had already recommended ghee, but will further that by explaining the benefit of extra warm moisture and oils in her diet now. My understanding is she wants to conceive soon. I am not clear if she and her husband have begun to try to get pregnant. So advice for her is most welcome. with gratitude and love, Kim Jivani Luchau --- Ysha Oakes <AyurDoulas wrote: > Hi Jivani; > > A lifetime, or even a few months of chronic > constipation creates > impurities in the plasma and deeper tissues that > will adversely effect > quality of foetal development during those critical > initial days after > conception. Guest guest
Hi Jivani; With her desires to concieve soon, definitely some pk, even a few days, is advised if she can afford it. It should come along with good Ayurvedic pulse/diagnostics which will be valuuable for her in multiple ways - self education being among them. In the meantime, and to both comfort her from the invasiveness of colonics and to help balance the vata while pulling toxins from the colon, I would choose alternating dashmool bastis (2 T herb/2 cup water, boil/steep/strain) with oil basti, even plain sesame (1/3 cup sesame unless you know differently for her system), both warm of course, alt nights. I do not know what would be prescribed by a vaidya, for how many days,. or herbs in the oil basti, or other diagnostic factores that are important. I just know the great value of both of these for soothe and cleanse different kinds of toxins especially vata from the colon and body, given the chance. This will begin to create some better health and balance in her reproductive organs as well. Undoubtedly there are herbal formula/e which will be beneficial before she concieves. Alternative to colonics I have experienced both - colemas with triphala decoction. 5 gallons used but delivered at client's pace with a shut off valve for comfort. You can see online search colema board for the equipment available in US. Dr. Light MIller's school of Ayurveda in Florda teaches this for excellent deep purificaiton results. Usually just 2 days in a row, maybe 3. BUT after each one,. same evening, one takes a small 1/2 cup sesame oil basti to correct what ends up actually as drying/vata increasing effect of the water based colema. Similar advice more important after colonics. Colonics, nor triphala neither can absorb for elimination the petrochemical type toxins or other non-water solubles, so this needs balancing and as discussed elsewhere on the forum, the oil basti both soothes, restoring balance to cell walls which are primarily lipid, and helps remove those type toxins.
