Guest guest
Hello Ysha, How about coconut water? It's amazing stuff. You can do a google search for " health benefits of coconut water " and get a lot of information. Here's a snip it. Here is some information about Coconut Water: " It's a natural isotonic beverage, with the same level of electrolytic balance as we have in our blood. It's the fluid of life, so to speak. " In fact, during the Pacific War of 1941-45, both sides in the conflict regularly used coconut water - siphoned directly from the nut - to give emergency plasma trasfusions to wounded soldiers. Most coconut water is still consumed fresh in tropical coastal areas - once exposed to air, the liquid rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics, and begins to ferment. Coconut Water is More Nutritious than whole milk - Less fat and NO cholesterol! Coconut Water is More Healthy than Orange Juice - Much lower calories Coconut Water is Better than processed baby milk- It contains lauric acid, which is present in human mother's milk Coconut water is naturally sterile -- Water permeates though the filtering husk! Coconut water is a universal donor-- Its identical to human blook plasma Coconut Water is a Natural Isotonic Beverage - The same level we have in our blood. Coconut water has saved lives in 3rd world countries thru Coconut IV. " Coconut water is the very stuff of Nature, biologically Pure, full of Natural Sugars, Salts, and Vitamins to ward off fatigue... and is the next wave of energy drinks BUT natural! " , according to Mortin Satin, Chielf of the United Nation's Food & Agriculture Organization. Coconut water contains more potassium (at about 294 mg) than most sports drinks (117 mg) and most energy drinks. Coconut water has less sodium (25mg) where sports drinks have around 41mg and energy drinks have about 200 mg! Coconut water has 5mg of Natural Sugars where sports and energy drinks range from 10-25mg of Altered Sugars. Coconut water is very high in Chloride at 118mg, compared to sports drinks at about 39mg. Data is based on a 100ml drink. Guest guest
Scroll all the way down the page, and you'll see a video of how to open the coconut. Also, I don't always use the meat because I drink so many coconuts. So I use a screwdriver and hammer and punch two holes in the top and drain the juice into a measuring cup through a sieve. Make sure to buy the young white coconuts, and not the brown ones. http://www.rawguru.com/html/openyoungcoconut.html Here's another option...http://www.onenaturalexperience.com/onehealth/ I haven't personally tried this product, because I can easily get coconuts where I live, and I imagine it's cheaper buying them unprocessed. But if you're in a pinch, this is probably better than nothing. I've also been pleasantly surprised at the remote grocery stores that I've been in that actually have the young coconuts. Now that there're on your radar you'll start to notice them too! Guest guest
Little off track, but I was surprised by the question about how to open the coconut. In India you can get fresh tender coconut at every nook and corner. A typical moving stall with a heap of green coconuts on it, a person (usually from Kerala) wearing a cloth called 'Lungi' He asks you what kind of coconut you want – one with lots of water or more meat? Then he wields out his dagger. He holds the coconut in one hand and with fearful movements of his other hand holding the 'weapon,' he slashes off the top part of coconut. With one final stroke, as if with magic, he carves out a kind of spoon out of the skin of the tender coconut. Then he puts a straw into the coconut and hands it over to you. You may eat the meat and drink the water. Feels heavenly on a hot Indian summer day. Guest guest
Thank you for the suggestions of using coconut water. I will give a little more background on this little boy who needs help. He is 5 years old and weighs about 35 pounds. He has very little muscle control or development, although he is perfect cognitively. He has an inability to chew, so his food must be liquid or pureed. He is very fortunate to have a mother that will do anything to advocate for him and to ensure that he has everything that he needs. His doctors are yet again threatening a feeding tube to increase his caloric intake. This is not an option that the mother wants. This is why she is searching for a new " formula " for him. It needs to be high calorie, high nutrient due to his limited ability to intake food. She is open to all options. Any additional suggestions that I can pass on to her? Thank you, Stacey
Guest guest
Dear Friends; Stacey also wrote >My concern with just the coconut water is - not enough calories to keep the Dr's happy, also fresh coconuts are not readily available in our area. I have passed this info on to my mom. I'm happy to see you are still in the conversation. I figured a 5 year old needed more than coconut water, but did not know details of his situation. Of course, the coconut water is great for what it is great for including electrolyte balance. There is an excellent brand unadulterated available in maybe 8 or 12 oz cartons of just coconut water, many children love it. Harvest Thyme or some such name is the company, undoubtedly can be online ordered and shipped as an augment to what else is obviously needed. Which is beyond my training and I " d like to defer after sharing what little I have. A girlfriend had a boy in sounds like similar situation. He responded very well to adding ghee or other good fats as well as appropriate digestive seasonings to the liquid foods she so lovingly prepared and fed him, and to being sure they were freshly cooked. For mamsa dhatu (muscle tissue) , I have in my notes this tissue is fed especially by yogurt, chicken broth and well, warm water all these according to Dr. Lad act as a carrier (anupana) for nutrients and herbs to this tissue. Key herbs indicated for nourishing and building mamsa dhatu are ashwagandha and bala. But details such as history, ama and agni evaluation, need to cleanse that tissue/remove toxins etc are needed before I would go further, and it sounds like something the vaidyas would address better. Blessings; Ysha > Thank you for the suggestions of using coconut water. > > I will give a little more background on this little boy who needs > help. He is 5 years old and weighs about 35 pounds. Guest guest
Dear Stacey I have seen a few patients with pseudomuscular dystrophy (which has similar symptoms, but is progressive disease). I know one vaidya here who has tried pindasveda with some success. I would try to look for the possible 'causes' for this condition, which may range from genetic (beejadosha) to wrong diet and behavior during pregnancy. My wife had treated a similar case but it was limited to ankle dysplasia and leg muscle weakness which was treated internally by various medicines, but mainly with those to improve asthi-dhatu, and externally with muruvenna tailam. This gave excellent results and now the kid is 4-5 years old and she can now walk (with a limp, but far improved). In a case like yours, we are certainly dealing with a complicated issue here. Most probably, the 'mamsadhatu' is underdeveloped and is weak. Assuming this as initial working hypothesis, you may use any oil for development of mamsadhatu such as bala tailam for external uses. 'Strength' is a function of asthidhatu, therefore, in my opinion we may use oils mentioned for ashtibhagna (bony fracture) for external application, eg,, lakshadi tailam, Muruvenna tailam, etc. this may be supplemented by asthi-nourishing diet, herbs, and behavior. If this is developmental, then it means the muscles and ligaments are not formed normally right from the beginning during the pregnancy period. Formation and regeneration of new tissue is said to be function of shukra dhatu and one may think of using medications to improve shukra such as ashvagandha tailam, shatavari tailam, etc. There may be some other aspects to this particular case such as possibility of stanyadosha (impure maternal breast milk), parigarbhic vyadhi (these develop due to ingestion of breast milk of a pregnant mother), etc., which may be taken into consideration before deciding treatment regimen. Guest guest
Here is a tasty dish that I've been enjoying recently with bananas from a friends tree, and delicious organic figs I got at the market. Bananas, Figs and Dates with a little honey (Lavender is yummy).
