Guest guest
TOPIC BRIEF Postpartum Nutrition and Ayurveda Powerful Tips for Avoiding Problems and Supporting Rejuvenation, Lactation and Happy Mother and Baby Tummies! In practice and experience as an AyurDoula intern supervisor over the last 15 years, the author has supported many mothers and babies and seen the effects of Ayurvedic nutrition make a tremendous difference in many ways. Mothers and babies have many special processes in the childbearing year, benefitting from these little known, but simple nutritional supports. Understanding even a little basic Ayurvedic theory helps, although it is definitely not enough for most postpartum needs. Most natural health/childbirth conscious as well as allopathic practitioners and mothers are actually swimming upstream and exacerbating the natural imbalances after childbirth, contributing to the many common problems. The three most effective tools for preventing problems and ensuring good experience for rejuvenation, balance, and strength after birthing are Postpartum Nutrition and Cooking, Specialized Ayurvedic " Home Spa Care " including hot oil applications, and of course, REST and mothering of the mothers. Ayurvedic medicine offers time tested and easy to understand, little known concepts for simple, very significant measures for delicious suitable nourishment. The postpartum digestive fire is unique, where in spite of high nutritional needs, maternal digestion starts out weak. From eating most foods to deepest tissue digestive/rebuilding dynamics, after birth we are looking at about 42 days! Without appropriate support and especially in both allopathic and most health food ways, this often becomes the root of a long list of commonly seen problems in the short term including the more focused on colic and mood disorders. It is often also seed of long term hormonal, weight, joint and emotional problems. A unique psychophysiological window wherein all tissues and systems are in a state of openness and transition gives special insight into the unique needs, opportunities for mothers and babies at this time, and guidance. Although training to become an Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula involves about 165 hours to provide our clients with best support, in this workshop we will begin to understand in this short session many tools for better care of mothers especially the first 2 months' window after giving birth. We will look at key ideas about how a postpartum body works at this time, what are the key supports, and discuss several important controversial issues around use of fats, carbs, proteins, dairy, soy, raw foods, fermented foods, leftovers, cold foods, serotonin enhancing foods and other lively topics. Handouts on cooking for postpartum mothers with foods to favor and avoid, foods by weeks postpartum and opportunity to purchase Ysha Oakes and Aparna Khonolkar's new Ayurvedic Cooking After CHildbirth with over 200 recipes are included! BIOS BRIEF Ysha Oakes, D.Ayur and PPAD has been working with mothers, babies, their families and related professionals for over 15 years for care, consulting and training. Her teachers include Maharishi Ayurveda, Dr. Saraswati Buhrman, Sarita Shrestha, BAMS/OBGyn, Vasant Lad, BAMS, Shirish Bhate, BAMS (Dr. Bhate, I hope you are ok with this reference?) and many others. Author of multiple articles and 2 books on the subject, she and Aparna Khonalkar will be announcing publication of a 2 book set on Ayurvedic Postpartum Recipes and Ayurveda After Childbirth - 42 Days for 42 Years this fall. Ysha is natural childbirth mother of 3 loving grown children. NOTES: Aparna is mother of 2 wonderful children and an Ayurvedic Chef in high demand at 2 CHopra centers in San Diego and with private clients. See her website www.themistressofspice.com. Aparna and Ysha are combining their previous publications (Aparna's lovely little book, A MOther's Blessing, adds some special recipes gleaned from interviewing Indian Grandmothers in her homeland). Depending upon the conference session length, we may go back to the less involved title introducing the subject of Ayurveda's effectiveness supporting mothers to avoid the " black hole in health care " , postpartum.
