Guest guest
Dear Dr. Bhate; Here in the US, what we have learned has been sometimes watered down or simplified to get some key information across to us as new students of Ayurveda. I've had some question in my mind about when to best introduce things like ghee, other fats, salt, and seasonings for babies. What seems important with families (we occasionally get to work with at that time vs early postpartum) is not only to start babies with very moist foods, but to include a little bit of ghee also. Otherwise so often they not only become quickly constipated, but loose sometimes appetite for the foods. For instance, with cereal foods/grains served for " lunch and dinner " , when not giving with any kind of dairy based milk (including Mama's first, of course), it seems best to me to include a pinch of salt, ghee, and even pinch of some spice to help their young digestive systems and taste feedback enzyme response to best handle the foods. Similarly, it appears that many babies respond well to some taste enhancing and gas reducing gentle seasonings such as cumin, hing, coriander, mineral salt and turmeric. Regarding also babies and their first foods, we encourage our clients not to feed bananas among the first foods, verifying some teaching that babies are less likely to have appetite for vegetables when sweet taste is introduced first (also with sweet potatoes, applesauce, and the like, common first foods in this country outside of rice cereal). If you can offer any best timing on these kind of things, undoubtedly many will be grateful. Warm Regards; Ysha
