Guest guest
Namaste I'm looking for a little advice to help a 8 month old girl with reflux and constipation. I've posted on this list before about her – about 5 months ago she had open heart surgery to close to holes in her heart, related to her diagnosis of Down Syndrome. She's doing amazing now – and mom would like to be treating her reflux and constipation naturally. Mom's also breastfeeding the 2.75 year old brother – who also has his share of tummy troubles – he's also pretty constipated. The baby is Kapha-Pitta constitution, mother and the brother are Pitta-Kapha constitution. All tongues are coated white. I want to suggest a diet to balance Kapha-Pitta while stimulating agni would be first. I'm also recommending physio to balance fascial tension from her scar and around her diaphragm and abdomen – they are already doing abhyanga at home. Because of new legislation in Canada, its difficult to get quality imported herbs. Any other suggestions? Om Shanti Tanya
Guest guest
have you tried Calm for babies and kids? This is a magnesium powder and giving a bedtime will help the baby/child relax and go to sleep. You can also look at mom's diet with dairy and wheat, but this will work tomorrow. good luck, Shawna --- tanyanash <tanya wrote: > Namaste > > I'm looking for a little advice to help a 8 month old > girl with > reflux and constipation. Guest guest
Take licorice powder 1/4 tsp, amalki powder 1/4 tsp, Haritaki powder 1/4 tsp, 1/4 tsp ginger powder, mix in a little honey such that powders should become little sticky, put them in muslin or very thin cloth and tie into a ball, the size of which should be comfortably fitting in babies mouth. Give the ball for baby to suck. It should be given after feed to 8 month old girl. If she can take powders directly, no need to put them in cloth. Same mixture in honey will work as laxative for 2.75 year old boy, if he also takes one banana with milk/ghee(take later if milk allergy) at bedtime. For improving digestion, take a little ginger cut into slices, along with saindhav salt, just at the beginning of meal for mom and 2.75 yo boy. If saindhav salt difficult to get, use sea salt or black salt. Mom can lick 1/2 tsp cinnamon powder in honey at beginning of meal, to improve her kapha+pitta and also help milk secretion, for both children. 1 tsp fenugreek seeds soaked overnight in 1 cup water drink only water taken first thing empty stomach water is also a " galactogogue " and insulin resistance killer remedy. TRy it for 15 days and take self-experience. Author believes that one reason for constipation in children is also the insulin resistance which parents pass on to children. fenugreek and cinnamon as well as banana are wonderful home remedies for constipation. If banana is causing excessive mucous, add a little black pepper or ginger there and see the difference. The responsibilities of carrying treasure of ayurveda, folk remedies rests on moms and not MDs or Vaidyas. What you sow , same you will reap. ayurveda , " tanyanash " <tanya wrote: > I'm looking for a little advice to help a 8 month old girl with > reflux and constipation... and mom would like to be treating her reflux and > constipation naturally. > > Mom's also breastfeeding the 2.75 year old brother – who also has his > share of tummy troubles – he's also pretty constipated. > > The baby is Kapha-Pitta constitution, mother and the brother are > Pitta-Kapha constitution. Guest guest
Thank you every one for your responses. Dr. Bhate - you mentioned that bananas would be helpful for the older brother's constipation, in addition to the herbal remedy /(licorice powder 1/4 tsp, amalki powder 1/4 tsp, Haritaki powder 1/4 tsp, 1/4 tsp ginger powder, mix in a little honey)/ that your recommended for the baby. The brother's GI specialist has suggested they avoid bananas, as here in the west, it is commonly believed that bananas can cause, not help, constipation. Would you be willing to help me understand how bananas can facilitate elimination? Is it the timing (before bed)? Is it only when taken with milk/ghee and/or the herbal remedy you suggested ? Is it that we in the west assume that all bananas are constipating, but really it is only the astringent unripened bananas?
