Dear Friends;

Dr. Bhate and others have been discussing simple measures for relief

from migraine and dysmenorrhea on the ayurveda forum, and this

additional note for benefits of ginger postpartum was posted recently.

I would like to request Dr. Bhate, would you kindly share how you use

for our members as well as myself?

This amount, I am not sure how much it is but we do know we must use

larger amounts of suitable carminatives which do not disturb baby or

mother with too much harshness, to restore agni (digestive and

metabolic fires) to good function after the labor/delivery shut down

and needed reignitions...as well as larger than normal amounts of

ghee. AyurDoulas cook with and favor ample roasted garlic, fresh and

dried ginger depending upon client and climate, black pepper, clove,

nutmeg if not constipated, as well as cardamom, cinnamon, cumin,

coriander, black mustard seed, caraway, dill, basil, saffron, pippali

if available and other herbs and spices for this and other purposes.

>The remedies given in message 9392 are mainly for PMS, the other name

for which is dysmenorrhea. The comment that " ginger and turmeric " are

ladies herbs requires more explaination. So also, why Aloe vera is

called Ghrutkumari requires explaination.

>Apart from being useful in dysmenorrhea, these herbs are also useful

in cervical and ovrian cancer, as per old posts in archives. When a

middle aged lady approaches with pains, swellings, Vaidyas often ask

the patient, have you taken 1.25 Kg of ginger post partum? Taking all

anti-vata treatments and consuming this much ginger powder was a must

after delivering a baby, within 42 days.

>For dysmenorrhea, aloe vera is first choice. either its fresh pulp as

recommended in message 9392 or " Kumari Aasav for 3 months " . Ginger

helps balance apan vata, whether be it causing PMS, dysmenorrhea,

arthritis, sciatica or spondilytis. Ginger and turmeric are ayurvedic

pain killers and also antiphlegmatics, antibiotics, antifungal,

antipyretics too. Where there is a pain, Vata exist, where there is

itch, Kapha exists, where there is swelling, pitta exists.

>The way ginger helps post partum, dysmenorrhea, scanty flow etc

turmeric also comes useful as a contraceptive, to fight yeast

infection etc.

>Dr. Bhate

Thank you, Dr. Bhate! Undoubtedly questions as well as useful

application appreciations have been raised.

Some of us have heard of Ayurvedic tradition to give mothers different

herb formulas at different weeks postpartum, and so far what we have

been given is more of these agni herbs in cooking as above for the

first hours and days, more attention to lactation support just before

the 10 day, 3 week and 5 week growth spurts. We offer dashamoola

decoction for the first 42 days, as well as a week fennel-fenugreek

tea (2:1 ratio, 1 tsp/2quarts water), a tasty special digestive

chewing mix with roasted fennel, black salt, ginger, licorice, sesame

and other ingredients, and a very yummy almond-edible gum sweet also

with ginger, nutmeg, saffron, dark raw sugar and other ingredients.

Strong fenugreek tea is given for the first few days also to help

cleanse the uterus.

Warm regards;

Ysha
