This post was by Todd Caldecott, Ayurvedic practitioner and generous

participant of the ayurvedic practitioners and ayurveda groups.

I do not necessarily indicate by sharing that I agree with all of his

methods, but his success is a bottom line, and it is a common problem.

i would like to relate a very recent case history for an exceptionally

common problem: infantile eczema

about a 6 weeks months ago a mother came to me with her year old

daughter, suffering from an extensive eczema that covered 60% of her

body since she was 2 months old - inflamed, red, bleeding, scabbing

and apparently very itchy - in ten years i have not seen such a severe

case

although the parents apparently ate " healthy " and the child was

breastfed, the parents were at a loss of what to do - many things had

been tried, from several different angles, including medical treatment

after carefully reviewing the diet i made the recommendation that

mother and child avoid all dairy, sugar and grains/legumes of any

kind, and emphasize lots of vegetables, organic/wild meats, high

quality fats and local fruits

i also had the mother take small amount of a blood-cleansing formula

raktaprasadana), triphala, a fiber supplement, a high quality cod

liver oil, and herbal teas including nettle tea and a " seed " tea made

of coriander, fennel and dill, to help with the baby's frequent colic

- no direct treatment was given to the baby

as i predicted the rash got much worse immediately after withdrawing

these foods, but after 2-3 weeks the condition began to improve

markedly, and now after 6 weeks the mother reported to me yesterday

that 70% of the lesions have disappeared, and those that remain are

healing and no longer itchy

note that no complicated or invasive therapies were implemented - just

common sense and patience

while some might not see this as ayurvedic, it is soundly based on

dietetic principles found in ayurveda and in the concept of satmya

(ancestry) and desha (climate)

best...

Thanks for sharing this case. I think some parts are missing. When you

said the parents ate & #65533;healthy & #65533; what did that mean. Then you took

them

off of dairy, sugar, grains/legumes etc. So did this mean the child

was no longer nursing? Was the mother eating a lot of processed foods

or enough to cause this problem? How did common sense, climate and

ancestry figure in?

Best Wishes,

Michael Tierra

My question in continuation of Michael's is, was the mother/daughter

eating pitta forming foods as well, and how much was it acid forming

foods/combining at issue? The lineage is referred to but not stated,

would be of interest. Certainly my instinct would be major pitta and

alkalyzing as well as reducing allergen supports, along with

blood/liver/small intestinal purifying and healing, and big focus on

how if any of the foods he removed were used if allowed to remain in

the diet. Removing all dairy from a 1 year old sounds quite

unnecessary to me, though I see most mothers overdoing and very poorly

using what dairy they do - cheeses, yoghurts, milks, whole grain

allergens, food combining, bananas and citrus also on my list of

avoids here, but the genetic/cultural picture is important to some of

the recs as well.

Warm Regards - Ysha
