Guest guest
hi tanya, this is certainly a challenging situation. i am curious as to why her docs told her she would have to supplement with formula. if the baby is gaining weight obviously she is making good quality milk. she can do some things to increase her milk supply. the best thing to do is for her to find another medical practitioner that supports breastfeeding and contact a good lactation consultant that other women in your community recommend. this is so much new information out there now about breastfeeding a down's baby, and many docs are not familiar or up on it. Also contact laleche league for referrals. thanks, mavis www.gentlecaredoulaservice.com www.sacredmotherarts.com ______________________________\ ____ Cheap Talk? Guest guest
I absolutely agree with Mavis. I keep hearing this a lot --- doctors recommending formula as better for a baby who needs breast milk and nursing more than ever. Those professionals in lactation may have the info she needs to ask the right questions, stand her ground, and find the right physician. I am passing this on to a woman whose baby had two heart surgeries in first two weeks of life. She probably has lots of connections and info. Guest guest
Dear Tanya; Of course I cannot speak with medical authority or training on this, only share what I would do if it were my baby. Sounds like there is good fortune and wisdom with maternal emotions? Home births have much lower incidence of depression etc. A definite yes on increased ghee plus look at the other dietary keys for us newly delivered mothers (see files here), extending them beyond the 6 week window. Attending much to mom's digestive strength will support baby, as will massage for both in my opinion. Studies in the US at Touch Research Institute in Miami confirm benefits to infant weight gain, even for premies, with daily (or 2-3X daily) infant massage. They aren't even using much oil with those babies for the massge! If it were my baby I'd be taking shatavari (especially for milk production, best one I know), arjuna (awesome broad spectrum actionis for heart support), brahmi (manas herb, and/or ginko unless I had thin blood already for ginko), pippali (found in more ayurvedic formulas than any other herb, enhances cellular agni and much more), cardamom (prana for the heart, carminative), pinch saffron (has supportive action with the other herbs as I understand it, indicated postpartum, benefits heart, spleen and other functions), and whatever else is indicated for context such as with high kapha and vata in boiled milk sometimes almond milk and tsp ghee, and probably giving baby a small regular raw ghee/honey linctus of arjuna with grain of calamus. I would also supplement my kitchari with midday fresh yo9ghurt or kefir lassi prepared in blender with 1-2 Tbs of highest lignan flax oil, a teaspoon of lecithin, sweetened with raw honey. And veggies like asparagus, okra, carrots, etc well cooked and seasoned and ghee laced. Does this sound about right, Dr. Bhate? The other herbs, I am not clear what will be indicated in this case, I have simply applied ayurvedic doshic and other principles to the tissues and systems involved as I know them so far. Can't help wondering also (sorry, crossing traditions again) about role of magnesium and antioxidants such as in particular, COQ10. Does arjuna enhance these? I remember you sharing in private conversation it enhances neurotransmitter serotonin also). Remember to refer her to many free articles at www.sacredwindow.com, and make that kitchari generously moist as well as oily. I " d be careful also to assure 1-2 times daily bowel movement and no gas in baby, checking other foods on the list to avoid any possible complicaton of colic which can come up for some weeks yet. Of course, there are many energy modalities, marma, Jin Shin Jytsu, Polarity therapy among with self-support flows can be learned and I have seen wonderful help there. Lastly, there are several essential oils I would be using, of course. Cypress, Helichrysum, marjorom and ylang ylang are well documented for multiple physical heart support actions (available in a blend called Aromalife). Holes in the heart? I would use them without knowing this specific issue. These are very gentle to skin when pure, I would use them neet on my baby in a heartbeat, favoring the blends for convenience and cost. Also the blend Valor (frankincense for many things including clearing negative energies, rosewood for gentleness candida and more, spruce for grounding and adrenal hormone support, blue tansey calming etc, a drop on feet bottoms (blends already have a little carrier oil), held for a couple minutes or more - very supportive to balance electromagnetic energies and give strength. Of course I agree with Mavis. Probably just because MOST moms in that situation... Downs and other mental retardation beings often have such pure hearts and function sometimes with unusual focus from there, it will be interesting for the parents what gifts there are to unfold here as pathways for this child's communication become understood. Guest guest
Thank you all for your thoughtful and detailed responses. Yes, Mom is well grounded and has been able to maintain a healthly perspective since the day of her first U/S when the possibility of Down's was identified. She has a lactation consultant who she is happy with and has found her midwife very helpful too. She eats local and organic as well. The advice about the formula was given when baby was a few days old. I suspect that the average women with an average diet would need to supplement with formula, but I think that Mom is above average, and that her baby will continue to thrive. I have worked with infants with Down syndrome for 6 years, but it wasn't until I met this baby that I really understood this tale. Apparently, in an indigenous culture in South America, babies with the physical characteristics that we identify wth Down's are considered gifts of God - so much so that all mothers massage their babies faces to create the Down's facial features. This baby was sooooo peaceful and content, both my partner and I were awestruck by her presence. Thanks again, Tanya
Guest guest
Another question - is there a tailum that would be recommended for this baby with DS and heart problems (one hole in her atrium, one in her ventricle) for her massage?
