Guest guest
Dear Gaura; Please read thru this discussion we did privately, as there are some additions - Dear Ysha, I have a few questions. I have a client who is about 2.5 months pp. She says her baby does not nap during the day!? Goes to sleep around 10 I think & nurses about 3 times a night, & gets up around 9 or 10 in the morn. Then is up the rest of the day. I also found out from Madhavi that she has insomnia. Dear Gaura; With what little info and late hour, perhaps a few comments will still be in order for you all - interleaved. Is it the mother or baby who has insomnia? As you know we don't usually wake sleeping baby, and if doing infant massage corrects the situation (try first) then this maybe not necessary following. So if you insist on keeping Baby awake, do by 6:30 or 7 for a couple hours to reset the routine in this case and encourage a kapha hours (when sleep is more supported by Ma Nature) nap for the newborn before lunch if possible. If the mom with sleep problems, assess also her ideas around work commtiments or time out at night? And remember the 3 or 4 page piece in your training notes on dealing with sleep problems for postpartum mothers. When I cared for her I did 10 days cook & herbals & 5 treatments. She never said anything about this. I saw her at Vera's birthday party. She's the one that had some depression, which seemed to get better as soon as her husband got back from out of town. I did give her the herbs you reccom. As I don't remember which herbs, will be good (and part of your internship to write these things down) to ask what her experience with the herbs was and does she want more? Specif, did it help not only depression but sleep, groundedness, etc. How regular was she taking them and for how long? along with the usual pp assessment questions. What can I offer her. I am going to teach her & another client infant massage next week. maybe that will help baby some. Good for mom and baby, always helps the babies to sleep longer stretches. At night waking 3X is fine normal, routine, unless Baby doesn't go back to sleep (in which case remember the 2 or 3 pages of notes you have on that subject), but daytime, probably you are referring to the infant " having insomnia " . Having high vata and perhaps pitta is how it can be looked at. You can ask the telling questions about diet, lifestyle, help Mom understand what she needs to lean on for her own lifestyle and dietary things. Also a few essential oils to play with, even the essential 7 kit. Maybe show her the color printout of 101 uses, will apply to much more than pp issues and at this tpoint, her engagements in life probably will be attracted to that. I don't have details right now so this may not be enough info for you. What questions should I ask her? Let me know . Thanks for your help in advance. Let me know what else you learn about her and we can talk more. Remember heading into winter and extra vata needs again, but look at digestive fire, ama/agni issues too, possible signs of thyroid low also - you may want to refer her to our good friend Shawna Doran, ARNP there in Alachua who does such excellent work and has the more reliable tests many docs do not (but they are not covered by medicaid). Alternately for thyroid, the basal metabolic temp home test with thermometer (read your notes). Also the devotee that had a still birth is having some issues. I've thought of her a number of times and wondered how she is, if she got out of some of those challenging attachments to how things should be. And if she still was attracted to the eoils. I've made some rec to her & will see her soon. She loves geranium oil & I'm ordering for her this month. What else? She is still depressed, grieving? There is a book called aromatherapy for healing the spirit, by Gabriel Mojay you all will enjoy, she might want to get a copy. Q which words fit: Grief, loss made unconcsious or vaguely pervasive, grief that one has never come to terms with, emotional vacancy, melancholy, remoteness, resignation predominate, " wound as yet too deep to heal " .... Cypress gives spiritual comfort but also supports grieving process, helps contain AND move the blood, to facilitate change and transition generally, to relinquish that hwhich no longer serves or fulfills us. stuck, unable to move forward...Also eucalyptus, helpful for inability to move forward, depressive states of spiritual contraction. encourages more expansive sense of awareness, may uplift spirit when feeling entrapment and limitation, when person is yearning for greater freedom of spirit. Clary sage concentrates its action on both bodily soul and intellect, melancholy, restless distraction, smooths flow of chi, helps especially with depression from chronic tension and ervous strain. relaxes and reinforces the nervous system, restoring inner strength when we have overstretched. grounding femininity, good also with waffling emotions/back and forthness of emotinal direction indecided. Clarifying and reviving our instinctive sense of kn owing, it disperses the clouds that gather over states of inner conflict. (all this pp 174-176). also, hyssop or pine help outgrow limited and let go of the outworn, but not so deeply transforming as cypress for embedded feelings of loss. Pine esp helps ease regret, and dissipate remorse, both special to release feelings of negativity. Thyme oil especially for strengthening the warrior or will against the known or unknown fears. powerful neurotonic, supports bravery and will. Helps for depressive states of defeat or dread, as well as of apathy. So whatever you have in this vein, a taste of it for her will help her choose and find the means to purchase her own. I would certainly encourage you to help enroll her as a member again if it is expired, even as customer and even if you have to occasionally (not good practice but sometimes I do) give them back your retail commission just to help them get started with their own account and to honor your work with that little pittance of 5% you will still earn. I've referred to Mojay in the new version of the eoils notes, did you get them? I ca't remember if I sent. She has a weight problem, bounces back & forth. Banyon has some good support herbs, what do you think? SHe has trouble getting up in the morn. But she does always dress nice & takes care how she looks. Ithink there are some marital issues there. love, Gaura Priya There were weight probs then too...as I remember she was so worried about her weight after the birth she very soon after began an extreme weight loss focus. Compliance with the recommendations is my concern with her for your sake also, maybe she is more ready? We can look at the catalogue together after you assess the doshic , agni and ama involvements a little more. Sounds to me like a number of herbs might help, but will be good to focus. Jatamamsi among them, ashwaghanda, chitrak triphala guggul, brahmi for sure, and shankapushpi if not also some blood cleansing or agni more specific support. But the chitrak will be specific to meda dhatu (fat tissue). Of great value to her I would guess if not happening, is willingness to cook regularly for herself and family, learning better nutritional and doshic balance! She will probalby need to focus on good strong spicing for her agni and weight, and may need to use a churna at the table as I remember her husband is thin and pitta/vata. Vascillating weight can be sign of much vata, stress in her life, also of extreme dietary practices, and certainly with her history, the high cortisol (stress hormone) factor may be bringing weight on back on agian and again. Which effects how much grounding, neurotransmitter, and cleansing supports we want to give. Enquire on her dietary and other patterns. Ask also if she has had thyroid tested or recommend the basal metabolic temp test, averaging over 3-5 ams befoe getting out of bed (see instrucitons in the thyroid piece). Consider if she is able to do some home pk, we will have to talk further - the pk as discussed another post this forum with oleation and other methods helps safely lift out the toxins which often are involved in repeated weight gain after dramatic loss. This is also occurring with more toxic lifestyle and dietary factors, but sometimes from toxins sitting in the tissues which get mobilized with fat burning programs, then the body uses what it knows to neutralize and be safe again from them. With high cortisol levels the body just creates more fat again, has a habit also for this. The clary sage will feel good! The oiis all of them that she may have. At what is it now, 1.5 or 2 years since her loss? Lemon and grapefruit 4-5 drops each/gallon water would be inexpensive and highly indicated multiple reasons (weight loss, inhancing water intake, ox, antioxidant, cortisol reducing, immune supports, antidepressants, liver supportive, and detox), though she definitely needs to favor warm temp food and drink, I would guess for kapha/vata? How much pitta is there I'm not sure. Ask her to several times let you practice reading basic 3 levels of pulse. Not right after eating or bathing. OK, I did a real night owl, hope this helps. Send her my love. Her name again? Love you Ysha
Guest guest
also make sure mom isn't drinking any affricated coffee, tea, sodas or chocolate. Enough of it could keep the baby awake. V
