I have it and have worked with many women who also have had it for as long as two years, maybe breast feeding related?... Thanks in advance. This list has been a great learning experience thus far! Guest guest
Dear Shannon; Do you also see this with immediate postpartum? I have not unless preexisting. Perhaps there can be a component of mineral depletions, but the big issue to look at as I understand it is vata ama complications (incomplete products of digestion/toxins) in the joints. The accumulations there can breed inflammation of course, feeding disease organisms as well as simply complicating/confusing the body's agnis(enzyme efforts) to burn the excess there. You will see joint problems are on the list of common vata disturbances. After childbirth we are in a naturally very vata increased or aggravated, we say vitiated time. Western cultural practices - better said, lack of - around postnatal needs create many overlays of increased vata on top of this natural condition. Also, labor and deivery - or surgery by somewhat different pathsways - create condition of very low digestive fire initially. All combined means, depending upon the woman's body type and other factors as well, various manifested problems. More vata prakruti (body type/nature) women will tend to have joint problems, some weight, some the various hormonal, hair loss, poor digestive fire, constipation, some more emotional, candida, these and joint are the main things we see unfolding long term from poor short term managment of this significant psychophysiological window. Of course, symptoms often combined. Shannon, how many weeks or months postpartum are you, and we would need to know more of your individual prakruti/vikruti, lifestyle, dietary and supplement/herbal factors to address your situation. With weather cooling if you are northern hemisphere, and earlier postpartum - avoiding cold foods and drinks, dairy at least at night, and a fresh ginger simple " pickle " of thin slice with lemon or lime and pinch of salt 1/2 hour before means can be important. Various digestive seasonings including ginger, black pepper, turmeric, cooked garlic most likely are indicated. Some relief may be gained from topical or internal use of essential oils which enhance body's ability to burn these toxins as well as offer antiinflammatory and analgesic support, but we would need to know more particulars for wise approach herbally. Western complementary medicine recommends the book, " stop inflammation now " and some are now saying inflammation is root of all disease. Of course, we know differently in ayurveda. However, the attention to both acid forming foods and pittagenic influences (which may build problems with the accumulation imbalances) is another thing to take into consideration. Yes, when we are breastfeeding, the body is on demand for intake of more food, including the acid forming residue foods. There are also more waste products accumulation between sleep deprivation, type of excercise deficiency, and less tendency to do cleansing. All these are natural conditions we should have practices to adjust for including regular abhyanga for mom as well as baby. Gentle home panchakarma process (see posts elsewhere this forum) or PK such as is professionally very well and gently done in the Maharishi Ayurveda clinics can be very helpful and safe after the first 2 months postpartum. Thank you for participating, and sharing your experiences. Many Blessings; Ysha Postpartum AyurDoula 14 Years 641-472-1695 (Iowa, USA) > I am wondering about suggestions for postpartum joint pain. Guest guest
I only know that before birth our ligaments become more loose and stretchy so the pelvis can stretch to let the baby out. Evidently this causes sharp shooting pains there. Then after the birth it takes a while to firm up again and that's supposedly why we often get carpal tunnel from positioning during nursing and other joint pains. Guest guest
You may worry about joint pain root cause later. this author would suggest a simple harmless home remedy if you can try it just for 3 days. Whichever joint may be paining, the treatment is this. Take a bucket half full of hot water. add a handful of sea salt and 20 grams epsom salt. Keepa a chair near the bucket and sit with feet inside the bucket. Remove hot water from the bucket by a cup and let it pour on knees. Carry on for 10-15 minutes. twice a day at your convenient timing. Post your experience (even if there is 50% relief) and then author will post why the treatment works postpartum. Even if above treatment works partially, following will certainly help. TAke two cups water, add 1/2 tsp dry ginger powder, slow boil till 1 cup remains. when look warm, add jaggery or crystal sugar and drink at breakfast. At bedtime, take 1 cup milk, add 1 cup water, 1/2 tsp ginger powder, 1 tsp aswgandha powder (witania somnifera) and 1 tsp satawari powder and boil till 1 cup remains. when look warm add crystal sugar+cardamom a little and drink. To hint at root cause of these pains, key words are " loss of dhatu " through breast milk. Vata takes the space of " dhatus " . ayurveda , Shannon <nourished33 wrote: wondering about suggestions for postpartum joint pain. Guest guest
Hi Dr. Bhate, These simple remedies are welcome gifts. > You may worry about joint pain root cause later. this author would > suggest a simple harmless home remedy if you can try it just for 3 Loss of dhatu...this isn't just plasma/rasa dhatu from which breast milk is said to be made, sounds like? Rasa drawing calcium from bones/asti dhatu, fats/meda, proteins/possiby mamsa? I look forward to Shannon's post so we can understand more this side of why we get best results by nourishing rather than cleansing, after childbirth, attending to the digestive fires of course, and how the vata fills the emptied spaces and creates the pains. > To hint at root cause of these pains, key words are " loss of dhatu " > through breast milk.
