Guest guest
Hi Dana and Tara, Forgive me for addressing you both at the same time, it is way past my bedtime. It gives me the pleasure of a little heart flow after being buried in numbers all evening, tho I can't wisely stay up so late often! Some of the questions I would ask in a consult are the same for someone who is feeling depressed or just with heavyiness, gas and bloating. Although Tara's list is a much longer one - these are just a corner of the story when emotions get, well, depressing. We have many internal and environmental factors we can look at and each one may give us some simple but very helpful guidance. Yes, yeast can easily be part of the problem, often with emotions as well as gas tho more likely the issue with latter. But for both of you, let's see, are you eating any leftovers, cold foods, frozen foods, fruits or fruit juices with other foods, peas, salads, fermented foods or cheeses, cheeses or sour cream at night, milk with lunch or dinner, lots of sugar, yeasted breads, wine, miso? ... such questions are good to begin with. And how often the bowels are moving, consistency, ... A big questoin for both of you - the bigger than many realize question - is both quantity and quality of fats intake? In Ayurveda, oiliness is the opposite of dryness. Oilenss is important for everything from hormone balance to acid alkaline balance, organ rejuvenation, to long /steady burning energy and oil soluble vitamin and mineral absorption/function to say nothing of quality of breast milk! Then there is the timing/food combining with quantity and temperature of water (to say nothing of quality). People can actually dehydrate drinking lots of water, as well as mess up their digeston. Try drinking just warm liquids, maybe with a little fresh grated ginger and 1/2 tsp fennel seeds. Tara, I would add 1/4 - 1/2 tsp ground or 1 tsp cut/leaf herb of gotu kola or a mix of gotu kola and tulsi, 4 - 5 X daily for first line support. This and sniffing several drops of herbalized sesame oil or ghee (plain is better than none) is recommended by Dr. Saraswati Buhrman as front line support for all doshic types of depression while we get to the other specifics to your situation. Note that The digestive herbs you enjoyed, Dana, which are standards in our pospartum protocol are not strong enough to reverse deeper problems or habits, they are really designed to augment/support alongside following the ideal postpartum no it can't be called a diet, it is too nourishing and delicious! Broccoli should be fine at this point well cooked with carminatives and butter or ghee or olive or sesame oil. My guess it is other issues. Tara, how many weeks or months postpartum are you, how is your baby, birth issues, are you breastfeeding, what kind of support/lack of, husband or partner issues, .... time to tell anything that comes to mind here may be useful. Who is your midwife, Dana - anyone I know? I'm sure you benefitted much from doing what you could to follow the written advice. I wish we had AyurDoulas available everywhere for you all! Guest guest
Hi Ysha, Thanks for getting back to me! To answer your questions: Tara, how many weeks or months postpartum are you (8), how is your baby (healthy - grew from 8lbs 15 oz to 15 lbs today) birth issues (long labor - wanted natural but was coming out backwards and was stuck under my bone so I needed an epi at the very end to take care of pain), are you breastfeeding (yes - supply good), what kind of support/lack of (support is La Leche League and wonderfu;l husband), husband or partner issues, .... time to tell anything that comes to mind here may be useful. I wasn't sure if you thpought cold leftovers, fruits etc were bad, but I started getting counselling and my therapist said that for brain chemistry reasons, eat alot of protein during the day and carbohydrates at night... Guest guest
Hi Tara; I'm glad to hear from you too. You have much we don't have to deal with, that is good. The list of foods are very important to have answers on, much more significant to reversing depression than maintaining protein in the day, carbs at night. Quality, how prepared, freshness, rawcooked, fats, I would need to know all these things in particular how I asked the question, as well as what form and quantity of carbs and proteins along with your other daily dietary habits to be able to support correctioin the chemistry and energetics. It is true many moms are not consistent enough about getting enoughprotein, but also true including for pregnancy and postpartum that many are aggravating their situation with overdoing it, as well as prep, food combining, temperature, freshness, again like that. counseling will basically be good hand holding, in my opinion. It may also give insight to some related issues, but I do not see it usually correcting source of mood imbalances with their source after childbirth. We all need support from loving conscious caring community. I do not mean this to be harsh, rather to say there is probably even more effective ways to spend your time and money, if you have to choose, and to affirm there is much good going on. Again, the dietary factors are part of the questioning. And there are many serotenergic foods and herbs best leaned on, I don't know of many animal proteins in that category. Details about your postpartum in ways most folks don't consider important are also part of the picture.
