Guest guest
To all supporters of natural birth and a woman's right to choice in birth: This is about the midwifery bill in MO that is being fillibustered. Even if you are not in Missouri you can keep the state politicians and families in prayer this week as the midwifery bill is at risk. Midwifery is currently a felony in MO -- a new law here will be a big win for Midwifery in the United States. People of Missouri have worked very hard for years and the progress has been great. You can support everyone here in prayer as they work towards the rights of women and men to choose where to birth their baby and with whom. Passage of this legislation will also work to improve the quality of care in hospital births. It is important to send postive prayers and energy to the political people involved -- the people here on the front line need your loving energy. The midwifery/homebirth supporters have been approached by lobbyists and groups for other causes and told that they are impressed with the numbers of volunteers and the attitude and respect of this group. However, this week frustrations are high, so they really need your collective prayer to support them. Thanks so much!! Janel Chuck Graham is *killing* the midwifery bill! Tue, 4 Apr 2006 10:02:24 -0500 My friends, this is serious. I know that this is kinda long - but please read on! The midwifery bill was heard on the Senate Floor last Wednesday! Unfortunately, Senator Chuck Graham from Columbia led a filibuster against the bill, and has stated a commitment not to give up until the bill is dead. He is not bluffing - he is serious about killing the bill to make his doctors happy. He succeeded in moving the midwifery bill back to the calendar to await further debate. (This further debate will only happen IF we can get a commitment out of him that he will not fillibuster again. If we do not get a commitment out of him, the bill will not come back to the floor and will die.) Chuck Graham doesn't seem to believe that his homebirth community will make a difference no matter what he does. We must show him that he WILL be held accountable for his actions and homebirth families in his district will not forget or get over it. He is killing the midwifery bill not only for Columbia, but for all of the state of Missouri. I'm taking my kids to the Capitol tomorrow, but I know that this is impossible for many of you. Here is what I'm doing - Today I am going to get as many signatures as I can from people who support this bill. I'm going to the library, post office, grocery store, and I'm going to be one of those who asks folks " Are you a registered Boone County voter? " If you want to do this today - please do!! I'll happily pick up your list and take it there tomorrow. If you could take some time to write a letter for Senator Graham, I'll happily carry it with me tomorrow. Please call me at 443-8574 or 808-3259 and let me know.... IF you are interested in coming to the Capitol tomorrow - fill your car with friends! Here are some details.... WEDNESDAY, APRIL 5TH >bring a letter to Senator Graham, including a family photo(I am happy to collect these from you today, if you like) >bring copies for the Columbia-area Representatives: Jeff Harris, Judy Baker, and Ed Robb >meet at Representative Davis' office, Room 112, at 1:00 sharp Here is a list of what else you can do..... 1. CALL SENATOR CHUCK GRAHAM EVERY DAY THIS WEEK: (573) 751-2162 a. ask everyone you know to make calls, too. The goal is to have his phone ringing off the hook with midwifery supporters for the whole week. If you call at night, leave him a message. b. identify yourself as a constituent and identify your profession c. ask to speak to Senator Graham d. be polite, but express your outrage at his filibuster and his refusal to listen to his constituents! Don't call him any names. If you are a Democrat, let him know that if he continues this filibuster he will lose your vote. Please, please, send an email Chuck.Graham This means so much to me, my friends. And a families right to choose to have their baby at home with whom they wish is too precious to not fight for.
