Guest guest
Dear Rasa; Just discovered I never responded to this question, and although I don't have much to add myself (kept hoping one of the vaidyas would check in and respond!) there is something ayurvedically that might create a little bridge between the advise and its value ... > an effort find some validation and information on some dietary advice that was given to a mom I am working with right now. ... rumor control? Definitely a problem ... ayurvedic trainings are hopefully becoming more standardized in the US, but to do this is a lot of work and even then there will be this challenge. > they sometimes run into people who claim that this or that is > Ayurvedic and sometimes it seems to me that it is just non-sense or > cultural superstition > > any information about avoiding eating green mango, pineapples, eggplant, and spinach during the first 5 months of pregnancy of > at any time during pregnancy? My only thought about these - and no I've never heard such advice - perhaps Ayurvedic midwife Terra Raphael at www.wisewomenhood.com might have more to say here - all but eggplant are pitta increasing, (so are other foods not on this list!) and the eggplant excessively yin/weakening by some (Chinese and other) analysis. Excess pItta is a common cause of repeated miscarriage. Maybe I did discuss in a later post ... Sigh. I agree, although there may be a few very sensitive to these foods for such reason or other, to get worried all of a sudden about these things is more of an issue than the foods are likely to be! Sounds like you have much good common sense yourself to help your mothers understand. > according to the " Ayurveda " these foods can cause miscarriage before 5> months! I was shocked and thought this was a terrible thing to tell a 1st time> mother! I told > her not to worry that plenty of people eat pineapple during pregnancy and> are just fine. So, just the wisdom you are using is very good, and as you learn more Ayurveda you can explain better what you have learned and show them the common sense approach, which is signature to ayurveda in my opinion. That's really how I learned! Often little pieces, when I had time to look them up or ask, and once in a while the good fortune to study with skilled practitioners which more than anything else helps us to apply principles. Most of us are not in the business of practicing medicine, only offering supportive measures and understanding. Master teacher Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has said, ALL MOTHERS SHOULD HAVE THIS KNOWLEDGE (Ayurveda for their family care)! So we have some homework, eh?
