oatstraw and other herbs

Hi Tracey;

Rebecca is trained in western herbalism; oatstraw is mineral rich and

somewhat bland and sort of sweet, so pitta pacifying, somewhat vata

pacifying, partly for the calcium and other minerals. It is cooling

though. It is also available as a cut herb in bulk at most natural

food groceries. The tincture as I understand it is more concentrated?

But has alchohol (is this one available alternatively in glycerine? I

know it is available as a cut herb; I would put a little ginger and

cardamom with it to balance it up for winter weather and all if you

are drinking it.)

Among the herb teas, chamomile is a good first call but is very weak.

The essential oil of it is much sweeter, less astringent, and

stronger, but again it is cooling. High vata, certainly part of this

picture, calls for a more grounding herb. Debilitated mercury will

not be so benefitted as would an overactive mercury here with

chamomile - that oil on the forehead of pitta moms who can't quit

thinking and planning puts them to sleep on the massage table often!

But for this baby, I'd be thinking in another direction. Where is the

restlessness coming from ... if we look at the jyotish for help, what

houses and influences are there in addition?

I'm surprised, REbecca, you didn't say anything about passion flower.

Can you ayurvedically comment?

There are a number of essential oils good for brain power, in addition

to the brahmi type influences, but first order of business is sleep

.... in the eoils group, probably valerian. I keep thinking of ylang

ylang also, but would have to know more about the chart to say yea or

nay there. In this case if you were in the area I'd put several

different oils under your baby's nose and see what she responded to.

Citruses, evergreens, sedatives, pranic supports, hard to say yet.

Martha
