essential oils safety question

Dear Martha,

I know you are busy but can you please jot a quick reply?

While playing at a friends' house today, Joshua found the small white

cup that fits the top of their steam humidifier. The one they put

ess. oils in. I didn't connect that was what it was for at least an

hour....he had been carrying it around the house (yes walking now full

steam ahead!) and possibly, probably putting it in his mouth. They

said it was dry but I smelled peppermint and eucalyptus strongly on

him and myself. No eye or other mucous membrane irritation that I

could see. Washed hands and wiped his face immediately when we figured

it out. However I am concerned his little liver now must detox any

oils he absorbed or ingested.

I was thinking of using some gentle herbs like dandelion & milk

thistle, and perhaps some ghee in the diet?

Thanks so much!

Love,

Adrienne

Dear Adrienne;

Do you know the source of their eoils? If they are organic, there

certainly is no cause for alarm. That and with no irritations (not to

be expected with dry source). If it had been irritating in any way,

the ideal quick response to avoid problems would have been not

washing/water but oil or ghee. Vegetable oils dilute and eliminate

immediately any irritations that way. Eoils are not water soluble,

and the water drives them in to be more aggravating with the strongly

penetrating ones (yes, like pmint and eucalyptus). Eoils do have

ability to eat the plastic and in dissolving perhaps some

zeonestrogrens are created. But it was dry; our discussion is

basically theoretical; there is not cause for worry. But here is the

deailed discussion.

About liver damage from eoils, sounds like you have been listening to

Susun Weed? The French model of use of essential oils has been well

tested according to Dr. Jean Claude LaPraz or Dr. Daniel Penoel, I'm

not sure which cited this (prob both) with organic/therapeutic grade

oils on cronic conditions over months at a level of 42 drops daily for

internal use on adults. NADA (nothing, dear ones) is at issue, the

liver all signs excellent. Thing is, eoils are very small molecules,

volatile as we know, and easily supporting not disturbing the liver in

many functions including some of them chelation of heavy metals, all

to some degreee antioxidant, et all.

If Susan or whatever source was actually citing research, I'm quite

convinced by my multiple sources it is after use of non-organic and

perhaps synthetic oils, from either the concentratioin of

petrochemical pollutants which certainly would create disturbance in

the liver, or my educated guess about the synthetic oils is they are

so out of balance ... a normal therapeutic grade oil has 200 - 800

sympathetically orchestrated by Ma Nature bioconstituents, whereas

synthetic oils have sometimes only one signature bioconstituent. I

don't know what the rest of the liquid is!

At his age Joshua certainly should be having ghee in his solid foods

anyway (and doshicly suitable gentle digestive/seasonings including

liver supportive turmeric), so if you have concern about the very

small quantity he was exposed to being impure (and we know that eoils

concentrate environmental toxins and pesticides, ladies and gentlemen

this is certainly to be considered in that sense). So yes, ghee is

one of the good carriers to help neutralize and in healthy diet and

lifestyle, remove petrochemical or other lipid based pollutants.

Massage and steam/warm baths along with helps the internal systems to

move it along.

Joshua's exposure was very minimal, but if there is concern, I'm sure

your herbal background will suit him with a little extra liver support

from that direction. Gentle is best unless the situation were

extreme, little ones don't need the strong bitters. Technically for

the record, Kapha babies handle them best, and pitta (Josh, as I

remember?) If there had been some severe liver issue, then a stronger

one (kutki is recommended in honey paste for babies of alcholic

mothers by Dr. Lad, very intense, and Dr. Shrestha would even such

case use mild guduchi on a baby). I know ayurvedic herbs better than

the western, you see.

I'll bet that llittle guy is a dynamo, like you and John, and keeping

you delightfully busy ... Hope this sets your mind at ease?
