Guest guest
WE have two new members, and I'd like to warmly invite them to introduce themselves and their interests. We have not yet talked about preconception ayurvedic advice, but there is lots of it! #1 advice for fertility, and for best quality semen and ovum is 2 or three seasons of panchakarma. If cost is prohibitive, there is a very valuable home panchakarma protocol one of us can guide you through. Warmly, Martha
Guest guest
I'm not one of the new members you're inviting to introduce themselves, but I'm interested in knowing more about preconception advice, as well as the home panchakarma protocol. I'm also curious about what ayurveda would say about Michel Odent's 'accordion method' to attempt to rid the body of excess heavy metals and chemicals stored in the body's fatty tissues. He recommends that women and their partners do this in the preconception period as well. The accordion method consists of doing the lemonade fast (lemon juice & maple syrup diluted with spring water and a pinch of cayenne) for one weekend a month (Fri-Sun), adding a regimen of psyllium husks during the fast to cleanse the intestines, and using steam rooms, saunas and moderately heavy exercise throughout the fast to mobilize the fatty tissues and sweat out the toxins. Any weight that is lost throughout the weekend should be regained within the next three weeks before the next fasting weekend is done, thus the " accordion " . The cycle is repeated for a total of six months. He has done just a tiny bit of research on this and does not yet have conclusive evidence on which to base his recommendations, so this isn't something I'd be recommending to every client at this point, but I *am* interested in how this might fit (or not) with ayurvedic principles. Does panchakarma profess to cleanse the body of heavy metals and accumulated toxic chemicals as well? Curious and grateful, Wendy ayurveda [ayurveda ] On Behalf Of Martha Oakes Tuesday, November 29, 2005 7:39 PM ayurveda welcome to preconception discussion WE have two new members, and I'd like to warmly invite them to introduce themselves and their interests. Guest guest
Hi Wendy; Forgive the delay ... and now it is rather late for good response, I'll see what I can do at this hour while I drink my ayurvedic herb tea . Preconception ... let's take that discussion in pieces and by your specific questions - re cleansing before conception now. Again, Ayurveda recommends 2 - 3 seasons of panchakarma for best quality semen and ovum before concieving. Dr. Odent's 6 month time period sounds very wise, but I'd lean more on the PK, I'd make sure there was a parasite check from a really good lab such as the Smokey Mountain Lab or there are a few others/need physician or ARNP to request. And then an gentle but minimum 6 week parasite cleanse if needed, followed by further ayurvedic procedures because even with a parasite cleanse such as Dr. Young's, very gentle as they go, they increase vata quite a bit and deplete. Parasite herbs I have seen are all strong bitter and strong pungents; that means strong on air element, very drying and depleting/burning up toxins and creating dieoff wastes as well. Much easier to do before pregnancy or once you have a baby to deal with, and more safe as well than during those 4 trimesters. Although I have not heard vaidyas speak of the " master cleanse " lemonaide fast, I have a healthy respect for it. This accoridan method makes some sense, but as so many of the toxins we want to eliminate are stored in the fat tissue, the oleation aspect combined witht massage, modified diet, steam and other heat, rectal administrations and herbal teas all work together very gently and deeply to cleanse any petrochemical based pollutants, from " conventional " antideprssant and many other medications, to shampoo/lotion/dishsoap/household cleaners and bug repellants to the better known sources in pesticides. Panchakarma I beleive is more valuable for that. Dr. Odent's realization of need for deep cleansing taking months is quite valid. Consider that from food to deepest tissue that's the reproductive), our normal healthy digestive sequence takes 28 - 32 days. So quite a discussion can come of this concept alone, right? I won't go there now. For heavy metals - I would do a hair sample test for them first. I'm not sure best (hydrous or lipid) cleansing method; I know that mercury can be excreted in the urine. Does anyone have more heavy metal usual elimination pathways/channels discussion? Let's go to some version of chelation, such as 2 tsp cilantro juice daily. Again, the ayurvedic approach to how the cilantro will be used refines it by season and agni (digestive fire/enzyme strength) and body type. Such as - cilantro is known to help chelate heavy metals from the body, and is also very cooling (as can be effect of mobilizing some of the heavy metals to come out into the blood stream) thereby increasing vata. So, warm it up in a fresh chutney/salsa, with fresh ginger and/or garlic, maybe some toasted mustard seed and cumin, definitely some salt, a bit of honey goes well, and lime or lemon juice. Lemon being warming and lime cooling, honey warming light sugar cooling, like that we create our recipe according to cold/warm weather, cold body type or warm. Dr. Gary Young, aromatherapy master formulator and researcher, uses both helichrysum oil and a blend he callse Juva cleanse (both very expensive, but cheaper than chelation) in capsules internally. Using the Juvacleanse alone 2 -3 capsules daily (I'd have to listen to my cd on it again) and no other protocols on a small initial research group he found urinary output dramatically increased over several days and then leveling off. His assessment was that some tissues including liver, lymph, blood and kidneys were being cleansed in this step, and proposed another increase would show in several days as the oil cleansed the (known levels of) mercury in these clients from deeper tissues in a second phase. I have not followed up on that study to tell the confirmation or not. But the results in mercury level change tested was significant. This would be my course of cleansing along with cilantro for metals. I'm sure this " lemonaide " cleanse helps to some extent, and the gentleness of Dr. Odent's accordian process makes some good sense. Ayurveda does recommend a healthy regimen for all to the extent their body type dictates - of skipping a meal a week or fasting a day a week according to what works as a fast for you. Might be fresh fruits, might be veg juice and broths, might be just milk or just buttermilk lassi that day or meal, or for a few, it might be teas and water fasting. So the lemonaide fast fits into that general discussion ayurvedically, and if the faster is not too fragile, it would be very healthy practice for anyone. The home PK protocol - when my eyes aren't drooping I'll find it and post it up int the files section tomorrow. Can also be found in Dr. Vasant Lad's " Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home REmedies " wtih good discussion, but it is wise to undertake only under some hand holding, from a distance if nothing else. The master cleanse ( " lemonade " ) recommends a salt water intake as part of the longer version fast, and I know from personal experience leaving it out messed up my body's ability to properly eliminate the mobilized toxins (particularly, mucous in the colon is secreted and holds toxins; the salw water loosens it). If the psyllium works to keep the bowels moving it out, this is good, but for vata types, the salt water might be wiser. Anything drying/which sucks moisture from the body for vata types can be couterproductive. One of those " new group members " has probably sent everyone an advertisement about his homeopathic sales and the approach is not ok with me. HOpefully the other will share her experessed concerns and join us. Thank you Wendy for your questions, I hope this begins to answer? Namaste; Martha
Guest guest
Martha, thank you so much for this thoughtful answer! I have read it over a couple times and will probably have more questions for you when I can dig into it even further. I just wanted to say THANK YOU for now! :-) Wendy ayurveda [ayurveda ] On Behalf Of Martha Oakes Saturday, December 03, 2005 9:40 PM ayurveda Re: welcome to preconception discussion Hi Wendy; Forgive the delay ... and now it is rather late for good response, I'll see what I can do at this hour while I drink my ayurvedic herb tea .
