Yes, I do understand this. I did have her come out but on this particular day

little man would not wake up for NOTHING to show her his latch. She tried all

the tricks she knew and so did I.

I am wondering if it is just a matter of him getting a little bigger....his

mouth is so small, my nippy's are so large and it seems like he has a short

tongue. I am fair skinned and I recall this happening with my first, I just

don't remember how long it lasted.

Maybe I should try to have the lactation lady come back.

Thanks Vicki

Rebecca, we don't really " toughen up " nipples. We have to correct the latch

and they will heal. Baby must open wide enough to take in more of the nipple

tissue and make sure the lower lip is out and not tucked under. You might

want to have a lactation consultant at your hospital look at the latch once.

I think it would be worth it to have an ibclc see the latch. any size baby

mouths and nipples should go together or the species wouldn't have lasted

this long. Try to time it so he is due to eat when she gets there.

Hope things are getting better, I'm proud of you for persisting. Feel free

to write with questions, even though it's kind of hard to solve some things

by email. Vicky

Rebeccah, check to make sure he doesn't have a short frenulum, have the LC

look for that. That would keep him from getting his tongue out far enough

and under the nipple tissue. When he cries does the piece of skin under his

tongue hold his tongue down? Vicky

REbecca,

Sore nipples tend to respond REALLY QUICLY to a few minutes sun twice

a day, and ample high lignan flax oil ingested. Better than anything

else I know (latch business excluded).

Yes, Rebecca, and if you have any yeast developing on your nipples

sunlight kills that too. And the male neighbors will be happy,

Ha, funny! I don't think we have yeast, I've been looking since someone else

suggested that, whew. I am going to have the lactation lady come out today. my

nippy's are getting better but we still have this annoying nursing relationship

thing that I really want to shift so, I'll keep ya posted!

Thanks ladies

  • 3 weeks later...

Dear Rebecca;

I'll call tonight or tomorrow ....

Who is this He, anyway!

>I don't want to use them forever which was the advice of the person

who suggested them (he said to use them indefinitely, that didn't feel

right to me!).<

Not good odds, there, no offense to the guys, but that's not who to

get best advice from as you well know. Whew. I suspected your

silence wasn't about all oks, wish you had returned my call early on,

not that I could have helped with this one from a distance.

Good thing you are such a strong mama. What ayurvedic herbs are you

using for yourself, and how is your routine? The AyurDoula care is an

ideal of course, but I've seen such great results with moms who just

did the self care - self massage, dietary, culinary herbals, rest,

keeping in, like that.

Love,

Martha

Update,

So the " he " in the previous email was Seamus' pediatrician, who, in his defense,

has a toddler his wife exclusively breasdfed etal... We had gone to see him a

few weeks ago off the advice of,the lactation consultant who came to the house,

assessing he couldn't stick out his tongue far enough and said to see about

clipping the frenulum, as did Vicky off this group as well.

Well he had no frenulum to clip , insert nipple shield advice.

I've been using those ever since but feel like I shouldn't plan on using them

forever which was his suggestion.

Went to the breastfeeding center yesterday with Seamus, the lady there taught us

a new latch to use, which basically pushes his chin forward first. It helps and

sort of works, I feel like he needs to get a little bigger b/c I see a definite

improvement in his tongue usage the more time that passes. So now I have the

tools and some goals set for being off the shields entirely.

I nursed yesterday 4 times without them and today 3 so far.....we will get

there. He's gaining weight well, he's almost 12 pounds already!

Anyway, Martha, you should call me when you get a chance and feel like talking.

Bless

Rebecca

Yea, Rebecca! You have done really well, lucky boy you have for sure.

Please forgive the no call yet ... tried a few times it didn't work,

and I'm swampt with 3 years old tax records to now file even tho they

will owe me, otherwise they " filed for me " (didin't know they could do

that!) and without my deductions, are showing a whopping bill. Sigh.

So I'm mostly home, but really tied to this and now can't send email

for some crazy karmic reason. Spent hours on the phone and net before

having to drop it. Sounds like you've done the job well anyway, but

if you feel you need some couseling with herbs or? let me know. 641

Love,

Martha
