This workshop covers the primary theory components of the Ayurvedic Doula training which support the postnatal mother through one of the three biggest transitions of her life - physically, emotionally and spiritually. Knowledgeable and skilled doula support which works with Mother Nature within one’s postnatal body and home frees a woman to mother (and partner) best, avoiding postpartum depression and supporting a woman’s most rapid return to vitality, immune strength, and balance. Ayurvedic medical texts say influences these first 42 days, last for about 42 years. Results will also be immediate. These skills will also assist the Post Partum Doula in marketing her practice. We will discuss the Ayurvedic explanation of anatomical, physiological, and spiritual changes as well as cultural factors creating this challenging window. Included is the Ayurvedic approach to being prepared, valuable self-massage techniques, breastfeeding and first foods and the common issues with mechanics of desiring and gathering support for this sacred process. As part of the cooking unit, significant class time will cover a woman's unique nutritional needs (lactation, weak digestion and rejuvenation in the wake of labor and sleep deprivation) Postpartum nutrition and Ayurvedic cooking class is in a hands on format. We will be preparing suitable, delicious postpartum meals with lots of conversation about dietary challenges such as dairy, sweets, salt, spices, wheat, beans, nutritional access, cooking methods, calcium, iron and more. Martha Oakes has been an Ayurvedic postpartum doula since 1992, and has been speaking and publishing articles about it since 1990. She is founding faculty of the RMIYA Postpartum AyurDoula training program. Her self-published book is currently under major revision, however, is available. Martha has trained small groups of postpartum doulas while maintaining a private practice for 6 years in Boulder, Santa Barbara, and Quebec. Her studies and work with essential oils began in 1997.
